Thinking of buying the ACER Predator Orion 5000 PO5-640 but worried about cooling.

Hi all, long time lurker first time signing up and poster!

I know this topic has been covered to death, but i'm looking to buy the Orion 5000 P05-640 from Currys here in the UK. For the past 8 years i've only had gaming laptops (lack of space in my old house, plus a lot of travel meant that was a better soultion) So i've lost a lot of knowledge in building PC's as tech has moved on since then so after some advice. I do want to have the luxuary of a desktop system again now I have space, and it seems it's actually cheaper and easier to get a pre-built at the moment.

I know cooling while under load seems to be a big issue with this system, and that's slightly putting me off. I won't be doing any 4k gaming however due to monitor limitations. I'm also kinda restricted to buying only from Currys due to my work having a TechScheme (money comes out your wages before tax) with them. So that limits me to what other CPU coolers i can purchase. As i'm not planning to game higher than 1920x1080 am i likely to see high temps? My house is an old solid granite Cornish house so freezing in the winter, relatively warm in the summer so ambiant temps shouldn't have an impact.

I know the case cooler style is the more popular upgrade for this system, but the website above doesn't really have any options apart from the one by Be Quiet, but i believe that's far to big going on the measurements people have posted here. The ASUS ROG Ryuo 120 seems an option, but i've read that the 120 AIO's don't really offer any better cooler over the stock cooler.

So that kinda leaves me with the 240 AIO's (and the only ones currently in stock but i can't order until 1st May anyway), i've read a few posts here that say installing one is a PITA, but is it possible? I'm not too fused about removing parts to get it fitted.

Or, do i simply see what the temps will be like once i get the system before worrying about it?

Last option is simpy get another gaming laptop lol!

I think you should get it and see what temperatures are like first with the style of games on the resolution you play at, after that if you decide to change some things up it's actually not that hard once you get started, the 5000 and 7000 share the same case, so you'll have few choices to the route you can take - being in the UK there's a ACER reseller on ebay who supplies brand new predator orion case parts , you can get the 240 AIO bracket, and even a verticle GPU mount if required for the 7000 series which will be a direct bolt on for your 5000, if you don't want to do that then people on these forums have gone for Noctua tower coolers.

One thing i can say is the Predator orion ( PO5-640/PO7-640 ) cases are extremely versatile and have alot of upgrading potential which is alot for a prebuilt considering alot of manufacturers lock their systems down from the case to the components with proprietary parts. Everything in the acer predator can be changed out from the PSU to the motherboard/GPU , it can even accommodate the largest RTX 4090 so is quite future proof, maybe look at the 7000 series from currys with the 3080 it's cheaper then the 3090 version and everything else is the same and not much more then the 5000, that could also be a option to explore.

neo is right and he knows what he is talking about he has helped me countless times and as he stated most of us who got the PO5-640 series mine being the PO5-640-UB11 installed the Noctua NH-U12A dual fan tower cooler and it has dropped our CPU temps 10-20 C depending on the game and your settings. and i also have 2 fans on the top rack for exhaust also they help out alot and i added more memory from crucial every little thing we do helps keep it cool but the biggest thing i have noticed is 1920x1080 runs alot cooler than 2k and 4k on the GPU but its not only the monitor some games have a higher resolution at max settings i just found that out on my main game i play Days Gone it sets the game res at 2k using max settings so i lowered it down to match my monitor and my GPU temps dropped almost 10 C i was shocked.

Ahh the 7000 is out of budget, we're only allowed a max of £2500 via the techscheme on work. I'm upgrading from a Asus Rog Strix 2 gaming laptop, that has the i78750H and full RTX2070 so the 5000 is still a significant upgrade with, as you say, lots of upgrade potential! So if i was to get a 240 AIO it won't bolt into the case directly? Do i need to purchase a 240 AIO bracket first?

Interesting just went to their site and they no longer do the PO7-640 and are doing the PO7-650 variant, difference would be that the 650 has a Z790 motherboard, support xmp and 13th gen CPU, but still only comes with a 3080, and they've priced it at 2799 instead of the 2499 of the original 640.

So the 240 AIO wouldn't bolt into the 5000 case directly, i believe it uses a different top part that doesn't have the mounting for it,

Either way if you get the 5000 and are upgrading the case then message the seller first.

and then like the rest of us put the extra argb stock cooler fan right above the cooler as you see in my pictures of my pc

and i looked to see if currys had any good ddr5 memory for your pc and they only have 2 kinds argb corsair and ya dont need that i personally swear by crucial i mixed crucial with the samsung that came with mine for 48gigs and it works great when gaming but for benchmark testing it was worse so i ran all those with just the 32 from crucial. goodluck and keep us posted.

i went with the model with the 3070 because i didnt wanna spent the extra 450 for the pc with the 3080 and i wasnt sure if i would need it, its sold here in the usa at bestbuy, for you tho its only a 300 dollar difference not bad. i looked at every gaming pc there and none come with a tower cooler so thats something you will have to add later on if you need it and trust me you will EVERY acer desktop comes with subpar cooling and thats not a knock on acer all manufactures do that on lower to mid priced gaming pcs i have noticed and before i upgraded my cooler my highest temp gaming at 1080p max settings was 63 on RDR2 and Days Gone and Shadow of The Tomb Raider i dont have any COD games or others ones that run hot BUT when running Cinebenchr23 it hit 85 now 63 so the tower cooler def helps and those games that ran at 63 now run 43. and will all my upgrades i have made i now love this pc and am very happy with it the looks and case are awesome and the lighting is amazing once ya dig into it and learn it.

I fixed this problem by installing two Noctua NR-S12A PWN case fans on top in intake configurations (air goes in). My CPU temps dropped from 90-100C to 63-70C

during gaming with Predator Sense in auto mode. I did not have to install aftermarket cpu coolers. Hope this helps.

just think how good it will cool if ya tried it in gaming mode haha, i dont like auto it doesnt work properly on my 5000, so i use gaming when gaming auto for everything else.

Just like what others are saying, the stock CPU cooler of this model is not good enough. Better swap it out with an aftermarket cpu cooler. In my case I swapped it with a Noctua NH-U12S CPU cooler. Unfortunately I had to take out the motherboard to mount the backplate. To remove the stock backplate, you need to carefully peel off the plastic backplate as it has a sticker which adheres to the backpanel of the CPU mount. For safety purposes, I would recommend that you also remove the RTX3080 and the RAM modules as you don't want to mess them up while removing the old thermal paste from the CPU. I reused the old predator cpu cooler fan on the Noctua heatsink.

After running Cinebench, CPU temps only reached 85C max as compared to the stock cooler which took it to the 100C mark. I ran the predator sense in auto mode while doing the testing.

well thats awesome but ya shoulda kept the 2 fans for the top rack my cinebenchr23 never goes over 64 now, the more fans the better, and then go one step further and remove the GPU bracket it improves air flow more that i coulda imagined, i see you use the HDD i didnt get any so i removed that for better air flow for both front fans, but good job getting started and yeah all acer predator gaming computers have subpar cooling but glad ya got a start on it, if you wanna go further those other upgrades are helpful.

I just get my Orion 5000 home and the CPU gets up to over 90c when playing PUBG, I saw that you both put fans in the top which im also gonna do, But one of you have the fans so they blow in air and one of you have so they blow out air, in what way should i mount them? Intake so the fans blow right on the CPU/GPU or the other side so it blows out?

I would not recommend putting top exhaust fans if your issue is the CPU getting to 90C as it did not work in my case. I would highly recommend investing in a CPU cooler just like I posted. It will be an added work but trust me it will be worth it. I was playing FAR CRY 6 and CPU temps would stick to 60C max compared to 90-100C with the stock CPU cooler.

Besides, top fans are supposed to blow air out as warm air in the case rises by physics. Setting it up as both intakes would only introduce dust into your system unless if you put a mesh filter on top which in my opinion will somehow minimize the dust getting in.

yeah you're going to need some type of liquid or air cooling to help out and also get predator sense and run it in gaming mode, i have the PO5-640-UB11 it didn't come pre-installed on mine so when i first was gaming my temps went up like yours then when i called acer and they told me about the program and gaming mode those same games went down too 63C, then after installing the Noctua NH-U12A in my 5000 they now are at 32-48 depending on my ambient room temperature, right now its summer and my central air is cranking on 68F and I'm in my basement where its 62F so I'm averaging 32-38C CPU now and 48C GPU, and yes the upper fans should always be exhaust because your GPU is sucking in air from the bottom and blowing it out its sides and top, i also removed the HDD caddy and GPU bracket they blocked all the air from the front fans, i also game with the front panel and side glass panel off it all helps reduce temps lol, I'm always here if you have any more questions or need help.

Yeah i have the predator sense preinstalled and use GameMode or increase the fans on my own, But the CPU Cooler is [Content removed]… over 90c when playing PUBG smh

I have a Orion 7000 (i9 12th, 3090) with a 120mm AIO which i am looking to upgrade to a 240mm AIO. Which one according to your experience would be the easiest to upgrade to? ( plug and play) without having to think about usb connectors not fitting etx. Just looking for a simple solution for someone not thar experienced.

yeah, i haven't heard from NeoGeo in months i have no idea what's going on i even reached out to check in with him to see how he is doing and nothing in over 6 months. i hope he is ok. but if you search his name, he has many articles here on what to do and what to get. basically, any 240mm AIO will work. some just have a power connection that requires an adapter is all. you can always go air cooling also the Noctua NH-U12A will fit your case and cool that CPU really well. i have it and i love it. and if you do go air cooling get 2x120mm fans as exhaust on the top also.
