So, this will be weird, I am sure. My question is whether anyone knows some place to have the hard drive removed from a password protected laptop and the files downloaded? The backstory is that my 18 year son died suddenly while in the hospital recovering from a TBI. It was during covid so we were unallowed to visit. His death was unexpected as he had been moving quickly through recovery. He was an avid writer and he made videos with his friends and I am desperate to find some way to recover anything that was his. My apologies if this isn't the correct forum. I'm just trying as many avenues as I can to figure out to recover some memories. Thank you.

If the drive is encypted then there's nothing affordable that can be done. It's unlikely that the drive is encrypted though on a Chromebook. If you have his Google login information or can get access to his Google account you should be able to use that to log into the laptop and recover any files you wish. We'd have to have details about which Chromebook model he has before we can get into any more details, since there are so many different ones.
