    hi....

There is no physical label with the serial number on the Android tablet, but there is a label with the tablet’s SNID number on the underside of the MicroSD/SIM card cover.

Also, both the serial number and the SNID number can be found in the tablet’s menus.

To locate both the serial and SNID numbers, simply follow the steps below: From the Home Screen, tap on Apps, and then Settings. Tap on About Tablet, and then Device Information.

Note: To avoid confusion, serial numbers on Acer computers will not use the letter "O", they will only use the number "0" Regards

Acer does have a KB entry on finding the SNID but it does not seem to include the Windows tablets. For mine both the s/n and the SNID are on the box but only the snid is on the tablets on the bottom edge. It is in very small print and I need a magnifier to read.

The SNID is identified with a prefix "SNID:" followed by 11 numeric digits. In every example I have seen the fourth digit has always been a zero.

I think this needs to be in the FAQ, the same question keeps coming up.

    Clean Original Install

What you need to do for a clean instal is to first get the Acer recovery disk if you do not have and reload "stock".

To order go to https://store.acer.com/store?Action=DisplayDataValidationServicePage&Locale=en_US&SiteID=acerna and enter the SNID on the bottom of the case.

Next go to http://support.acer.com (country of choice), select "Drivers aand Manuals", enter your computer and download the latest drivers/etc. Load it.

Then perform your upgrade to the OS of choice. That way all of the original/latest drivers will be installed and can be updated.

ps to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8 PRO is just a key entry, everything else I have seen requires a disk or drive or partition.

pps don't expect a Clover Trail device (z2760 chipset - Acer W3 or W51x) to run anything but Windows 8, Intel today only has the needed power management drivers for that OS.

I seem to be creating a FAQ by myself...

    Latest thoughts:

More and more I find myself repeating things. Most current is how to buy recovery disks (http://store.acer.com  & select eRecovery - URL in previous post does not always work).

Lately I also see a lot of posts about wifi dropouts. Now I know the W3 is not very strong but the W510 and my netbooks are.

In my experience the most common source of dropouts is two local routers on the same or a nearby channel. Personally I use only 1, 6, and 11 since a WiFi signal has a bandwidth of three channels on either side. FM will always pick the strongest channel but if two are close...

    See http://www.metageek.net/support/why-channels-1-6-and-11/

One issue is that the native apps (Windows, Andorid, iOS, OS/X) do not tell you the channel a router is using, only the name and a strength bar.

Recently I came across a multiplatform app, INSSIDER, that has good reviews (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2418212,00.asp ) and will tell you the channel each router in range is using. For my smartphone it was free.

Now what we really need is a place in the forum that can provide a FAQ for user suggestions that ACER cannot/willnot make. Then we can just point a user with a common question to the FAQ entry.

I am in an automotive forum that has (with permission) the entire factory service manuals and parts books online. Many questions we can just say "RTFM: section X paragraph Y figure Z".

How about it Acer ? BTW, don't blame the techs just be glad they come on line at all. It is Acer's restrictive policy about infomation disclosure we need to address, it really benefits no-one and just make user go to vendors (HP, Dell) that have a very open policy. Users may not like some of the answers but at least they do not get mushroom management.
