While playing Destiny 2, I cap the frame rate at 60 and get around 60fps with some occasional drops to around 40fps. However, when the laptop is charging, I will get fps drops to 8fps for about 7 seconds.

The model number is an Aspire A715-42G and has an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U and a GTX 1650.

I have updated the nvidia and amd drivers, disabled game bar and the geforce overlay and edited the power plan to apply maximum performance when charging.

I thought it could be a temperature issue (even though the laptop is used on a hard surface so the fans shouldn't be obstructed) so I downloaded Hardware Monitor and logged the lag spike.

I noticed the temperature of some cores getting to around 96C and then harsh drops in wattage and clock speed for several seconds. I also noticed big spikes in cpu utilization around the time of the clock speed drops.

The graphics card also gets its wattage and the utilization dropped significantly dispite the temperature being at roughly 86C.

How do I increase the fan speed or decrease the performance of the cpu to reduce the temperature while plugged in?

@CarolJenkins check the Quick Access app to see if yours has the Usage mode, and change it to high performance.
