Should a Nitro 7 work while running on AC without a battery?

Since day one my battery has been dodgy, it would charge for 15 or so seconds after boot then stop. Over time the charge dropped until it reached 3% as fully charged. I removed the battery and reinserted it after a short time and it charged back to full. Then the merry-go-round began again. The next time I booted it would charge to 98% dropping lower again on each boot.

This time, while plugged in to AC, it warned me the battery was critically low and shut down. I tried the above fix again but it didn't work, so I removed the battery thinking it would run on AC without it installed but I was wrong.

The power indicator is lit orange but when I try boot I get a flash of a blue light then both lights go out. It's as if it's discharging any residual power within the circuitry, and leads me to believe it's not switching over to AC.

I've never had any electrical device that won't run on AC unless a battery is installed.

Any ideas?

Can I ask a few questions regarding the charging?

With the battery installed and the charger plugged in, after the charging stopped, do both the charging and power lights blink together?
Does the laptop charge normally when it is off?

Most newer laptop mainboards won't run without a functional battery installed. Even if it did, it's not a good idea to do so since the battery acts as a ripple smoothing buffer for the power supply. I suggest that you bite the bullet and spend about $35 on a new replacement battery. Google search your full model number (for example AN715-42) and battery for vendors who ship to your location.

I bought a new battery and it's the same thing. When I put it in it wouldn't boot, switching off during the Acer logo. I tried it a few times and once it fully booted, showed the battery was being charged then stopped after 10 seconds or so, gave me the warning that the battery is critically low and after a few minutes began charging again. The charging again stopped showing battery at 0% and switched off ( not shut down )

I had a look at the DC power cable inside and 2 of the connectors holes have what looks like brown burn marks on the outside of the connector. I've ordered a new cable as my guess is its that, and if not I'll have to take it in for repairs.

Do Acer repair out of warranty laptops, even for a fee? If so do you know of any contact details. The support page is never available for chat, the only help being self help and I can't find any contact details.

Yes, Acer does out-of-warranty repairs. The chatline usually only works for machines that are still under warranty. Self-help is usually the way to find an authorized Acer service center for out of warranty repairs. Depending on your country or region, authorized service centers may be listed on the country's support page. But usually cheaper and better to take your laptop to a local laptop repair shop.

No the laptop doesn't charge while powered off.

Thanks, I'll try fix it myself, swop the new power cable over when it arrives, then if that fails I'll be seeking a local repair shop. Trying to keep the cost down.
