Trying to help my son. He’s got a KG1271U monitor with 144hz. It is only connected to his ps5. He can’t change the hz on the monitor to 120hz - he can bring the display up using the buttons on the bottom right hand corner of the monitor but there’s no way (that we have found) to change it. He has done everything he can on the ps5. Any ideas? We’re going crazy.

Could i check the model? Is it this one : KG271U ( https://www.acer.com/gb-en/monitors/gaming/nitro-kg1/pdp/UM.HX1EE.A15 ) , annoyingly there are two bmiipx (144Hz) and bmiippx (75Hz).  Should be on the sticker at the back . The monitors naming / feature set are a bit messy (sorry acer but it was terrible on thee models!) so appologies if there are a couple of steps to get things sorted if we can

Its one of three things -

    • 1) 75hz monitor (not this i bet)
    • 2 )HDMI not supporting 120 HZ
    • 3 )EDID not exposing 120Hz

For 1 - We can just check the model on the back, i bet its the 144hz one as they are far more common so i feel sily for even saying it!

For 2 - This one is a bit annoying as there isnt a service guide for the 144hz model. On the 75Hz model it only supported HDMI 1.4 which doesnt support 120Hz 1440p. It tops out at 85 Hz. If that is the case you may be out of luck display specs lists it its only HDMI 1.4 ( https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/model/7d661105 ) . Some sites have it listed as 1X1.4 and 1X2.0 so this could be a red herring but worth keeping in mind

For 3 - It could be that the monitor doesnt advertise 120Hz if it supports HDMI 2.0 on one of the ports. This was very common when the PS5 launched, but i thought Sony had started to ignore the EDID ( https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/1014850#Comment_1014850 ) . The EDID is kind of like a phone book of what the monitor can support, so when you plug somehting like a blu-ray player it it can negotiate what resolutions / refresh rates to use.

You can check the EDID from a windows machine with this ( https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/monitor_info_view.html ) . If you can run that for us we can check it, if there is anything for 1440p over 80hz we know that its a HDMI 2.0 and an EDID issue. From the Acer thread linked above, there are HDMI dongels which spoof the EDID to force it to work, this only works though if its HDMI 2.0.

Hi and thanks. The model number is KG271U Abmiipx. It has HDMI 1 and 2 and a DP port. The PS5 has one HDMI port.

The display in store advertised 144hz, and my son saw that recorded in the manual. It’s the only reason we bought it.I think it might be the red herring.

If we need to we will return it and demand a refund. Sorry Acer.

So that one is the 144hz version, so it deffo isn't 1.

If you have a laptop it would be worth checking the edid , or depending if you let laptop supports it , try running the display at 144hz with the two hdmi ports.

It could be as simple as having a dongle , although that isn't a perfect solution!

I went back to the store to query it, they said it will be that the PS5 HDMI doesn’t support HDMI2. So I guess we’re heading into dongle territory! Googling extensions. Thanks for all your help! If you know what extension we need for the PS 5 just yell!
