Hi there,

Is it normal for my CPU to be at 70-80 degrees Celsius with hardly any application running while the power cable is plugged in?

(My laptop was bought 3 days ago)

CPU: i9 12900H

A normal cpu temperature depends on which cpu you use.

Generally, anything between 45-65 degrees or (104-149 Farenheit) is considered a safe heat range for a normal workload.

While working more intensive apps or games , the normal cpu temp range can increase to between 70-80 degrees (158-176 Faren).

It your cpu remains continuously at the higher ends,it is degrading the life of cpu and also that thermal throttling degrades the system performance,so clean the cpu for the thermal paste, add some branded paste, that will cool your cpu temperature to some considerable extent, and also add some cooling solution for the system, I mean cooling fans, have you got a good ventilation makes your cpu temperature will go to some lower range.

There is another problem that is not Acer's fault here. The system has a feature called Turbo Boost. On my Nitro 5 for some reason Turbo Boost activates on Core 0 even when the System is just sitting doing nothing. This heats my system up greatly eg 90 degrees is reached while the System is just sitting idle. Now I have no idea why this Core is Turbo Boosted but there is a fix. You can turn Turbo Boost off in the BIOS under the advanced tab apparently. I say apparently because this Tab is hidden on Acer Laptops along with many Laptops, so I can't say I've ever seen the setting but I'm assured by many Internet searches that it is there. Now if Acer allowed their uses access to this Tab we could fix the problem easy but the reason given for hiding this Tab appears to be that Users can't be trusted to not stuff something up. Interesting that Acer feels that only idiots would buy their Laptops but back to the problem. This means that there is only two other ways I know of fix the problem. You can set the maximum amount of work your CPU can do in the Power Settings to 99%. This will stop Turbo Boost turning on but of course this also limits the top speed your computer can go. Or you can install a third party program, I use ThrottleStop for this. I am not connected with the Program or its developers in any way, in fact I have tried finding out how to turn Turbo Boost on and off so I can develop my own solution and delete ThrottleStop. So the problem is not Acer's fault as such but hiding the setting you need to fix the problem certainly is Acer's fault. But there you go thats my 2 cents, I'll go now.
