11-22-2022 - Long tone when launching/playing games in Acer Predator Orion 5000 RTX 3080

I really need help with this one. It is a head scratcher. I even took it to ACER support and they had no idea. I hope you all can help. I have the Acer Predator Orion 5000 with a RTX 3080. I tried to upgrade it to 64gb, and it would not boot (yes it was DDR5-4800mhz) with the long tone again. it accepted one of the 32 gb modules to run.

When i launch several games there is a loud long tone (like a POST code for a memory issue) when the game launches and plays. it is not coming from the headphones/speakers, it is coming from the motherboard speaker.

I have documented the games i have tested:

borderlands 3

tested: full screen, windowed, borderless window

tested different resolutions

tested changing the GeForce Experience preset

all caused long tone when not loading

game is unmodded

game is latest version

game is developed by gearbox

game is 3d open world

game is high resolution detailed game

cyberpunk 2077

long tone on launch until main menu

long tone pauses while on main menu but continues when enter game

long tone pauses when in pause menu

long tone dose not pause in inventory menu

long tone pauses when clicking and when in skill point menu but doesn't pause in inventory and map menues

lowered resolution and made it windowed sill caused long tone

full screen at original resolution also caused long tone

game is unmodded

game is developed by projekt red

game is 3d open world

game is a high resolution detailed game

long tone plays on game launch and continues until click

when clicking a menu icon the tone pauses for a split second then continues

tested with both full screen and windowed

tested when playing the story and tone persists

game is modded

game is 2d visual novel

game is a lower resolution mid detailed game

short tone on start but stopped

game is unmodded

game is a 3e low detail dungeon crawler

space engineers

when getting into game proper the long tone happens

when going back to main menu the tone stops

Usually it does fit, just a bit fiddly to get in place. Some users have just pulled the heatsink, installed the memory and the repasted and reinstalled the heatsink. That has the added advantage of being able to get a better quality of thermal paste installed...

Time to get a bigger UPS. :) A lot of the cheaper UPSes are designed for typical desktops, not gaming rigs with their larger power supplies. IIRC your system has an 800W supply and a lot of desktop style UPS models are 650W. You should look into 1500W instead to give some decent uptime on a power failure.

Yes, Intel does specify the DDR5-4800MHz type RAM for the Intel® Core™ i7-12th Gen i7-12700 Processors as this CPUs is in your desktop and these CPUs "Memory Specifications" are like below but, "Acer does NOT specify the below specs" and only specifies as supported max total memory of 64GB (into the 4x DIMMs) with ONLY type 16GB modules of DDR5-4400MHz type RAM.

Intel® Core™ i7-12700 Memory Specifications

1.   Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) - 128 GB

2.   Memory Types - Up to DDR5 4800 MT/s and up to DDR4 3200 MT/s

3.   Max # of Memory Channels - 2

4.   Max Memory Bandwidth - 76.8 GB/s

5.   ECC Memory Supported - Yes

And Acer also specifies that the only way to populate the 4x DIMMs slots is to have a 4x 16GB DDR5-4400Mhz at 288pin DIMMs (not XMP or overclocked RAM) populating DIMMS #1 #2 #3 #4. and NOT 2x 32GB DDR5-4800MHz AS THAT IS WHERE YOUR PROBLEM IS as the Acer OEM motherboard which is Acer part #: DB. E2U11.001 with the Intel® H670 Chipset/ALC897 is not compatible withg the RAM type of size that you populated the motherboard with.

This motherboard with its BIOS should only be populated (as Acer recommended) by DDR5-4400Mhz type RAM and NOT DDR5-4800Mhz type RAM,

You can try to update the BIOS (if you are not running the last BIOS?) to the last version: R01-A4 dated: 2022/08/22 and see if that will help (which I don't think it will) and see if that eliminates the beeps and errors within your desktop?

Thank you for the quick reply. that looks very logical and plausible. I am ordering 4 16gb ddr5's to try.

I will loop back and let you know if the ram works. However i do not see a way to get the DIMM 4 populated. the cooling tower is right on top of that slot. if I can get a module in it should be ok, but there is very little clearance to be able to get it installed.

Any suggestions?

I got the ram in and it worked great.

However the long beeping was the UPS screaming when the games that kicked the gpu into overdrive. Since it was sitting right under the desk where the pc was sitting on it was nearly impossible to separate the sounds.

So the 4x16 worked great to get the 64gb in there. It was a challenge to get the ram in,
