I have an Acer Aspire A717-72G-76V1 that powers on but nothing shows on the display. I tried hooking it up to a monitor using the HDMI port and pressed FN+F5 and FN+F6 to move the display to the external monitor but that didn't work. I plugged my external hard drive into it and the laptop beeped and it powered the hard drive so I assume the mobo is not the issue. What else can I try and what could be causing this? Also, the display and the keyboard light lights up.

The first thing that you should try is to do a "Hard Reset" by disconnecting the main and bios batteries and take the ram out, leave them disconnected for 15min and reconnect all and boot the laptop and see if it fires up with an image? If it doesn't then it could be the eDP cable and its plugs at either the motherboard side or the screen side that could be lose or broken (as this cable is under allot of movement whenever you open and close the laptop) so check the plugs and cable condition.

If all the above is ok then you need to look at the motherboard's ports where the EDP plugs plug into, as that is a problematic area that power, or data pins could be shorted or burned, hence and why its not outputting an image. Otherwise, if all that is ok then its your actual screen that a few of the backlight LEDs are burned out (if you look closely and in a dark environment, you should see a faint image) which cn't be fixed or the actual screen is burned out, but screens don't burn out easily or go wrong often.

If you need a new screen then look here for the A717-53Gs screen, make sure that you check your existing screen and see which exsact screen model number that you have and order the same number as that link is only a guide to one of the A717-52Gs 17.3" screens.
