I bought Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop in november 2019. I havent used it much. I believe the last time I turned it on was april this year to do some windows updates. turned it on today to do the same and unplugged it to bring it with me into a different room and it turned off. Plugged it back in and noticed its at 0% battery. the orange light is on and solid dunno if that just indicates connected to power it was blinking a little but then just went solid. The laptop can only turn on when plugged in which makes me think the charger should be fine I would imagine. After looking at some other posts and seeing mention of testing the voltage i did check and its putting out 19VDC.

NO!!!! Please don't use the ohmmeter like this again while battery is plugged into the mainboard and/or mainboard into the AC charger!!! You must make all battery measurements with battery and charger unplugged.

If the battery is 0V unplugged, then it's dead. Or its internal charge controller has failed. Either way, it should be replaced. About $35usd for a new battery.

Battery probably self-discharged below the critical 5% charge level since April. Sometimes kills the battery. To find out of If it's reoverable, shut the laptop off plugged in. Wait at least 24 hours to see if the battery charge LED turns from blinking or steady orange to steady blue. Then try to turn it on again to see if battery charge tray widget seems normal.

When I used it last in april I had it plugged in and it has been plugged in ever since. Not sure if keeping it plugged in is bad for the battery or what. Its still just blinking orange. Battery is always at 0% when I turn it on and check the power settings in windows. So the battery is just dead then? My older toshiba from 2014 has never had issues like this and I had left that one plugged in a lot too and the battery is still fine. Odd to have this die so soon

If the charge LED was solid or blinking orange when you first looked at it after sitting plugged in since April, I'd guess one of the battery's 4 cells has shorted out or developed high resistance. To check for a short, measure its voltage output between the extreme ends of its connector with a multimeter. Should be at least 15vdc. High resistance can be checked to see if it'll light a small 12volt instrument lamp.

I got 17.17 volts measuring off these pins with it plugged in. I don't have any low voltage lamps laying around. I havent really used a multimeter in like 20 years but I tried testing at 20 ohms across those same pins and it reads OL, unhooked the battery same thing but voltage is 0.0 so I guess since I have it open now might as well try a new battery. Attached is where I tested first before unhooking it then testing off the connector pins unpowered
