Hey guys!

I got a TravelMate P215-51 machine, that has an additional bay for a 2.5" on the bottom. I purchased a Samsun 870 EVO, 250GB SSD to use there. I connected the SSD with the included motherboard-Sata flex cable, and when i start the machine, it hangs on the ACER logo. Can't get into BIOS, it just stuck there (waited several minutes) . The funny thing is, I asked a friend of mine for an SSD to test, he gave me a WD green 256GB, and that does work with my laptop! Then came the next question, we tested the new Samsung in his PC, and that also works! So, its a compatibility problem with my laptop and this Samsung SSD.

What might be the cause? BIOS version is 1.04, can go to 1.08, but can't find any info on the release notes that would indicate that would fix the issue.

  • Maybe it's something related to sata mode. Run this procedure:

    a) press windows+r, type msconfig, go to system boot and enable safeboot.

    b) then go to power options and disable fast startup and restart your computer.

    c) access the bios, go to the main tab, press ctrl+s and change the sata mode to ahci.

    d) press f10 to save and exit.

    e) the computer will start in safe mode.

    f) turn off the computer, disconnect the lithium battery and install the samsung ssd.

Nop, didn't help, already in AHCI mode. the system is on an M.2 drive. and it does work with the WD green 256GB.

The only difference I see is that the Samsung uses 1.1amp, the WD uses 1.0 amps.

  • So I would try to update the bios to check if the motherboard recognizes the 870 evo.

Yes, I don't see anything in the BIOS notes that would reflect on SATA issues, but they don't give us everything that changes, only the highlights. Try the upgrade to 1.08, if for no other reason than to verify it doesn't make a difference. I can't think of anything Samsung might be doing that would cause issues with initialization at power up.
