Hi!

I have an Acer Aspire 5, a515-56. I would like to extend two external monitors (possible on my other laptop). I have a BenQ EL2870U monitor connected through my HDMI port. I have an older Acer VGA monitor that I want to connect as well. The USB ports require active adapters I've figured out, and additional drivers. So I got this one:

The driver install though makes my computer CPU usage shoot through the roof, not for running the monitor though, like something is incompatible about the driver and causing problems. I have read about the chipset being the issue, and I do have a USB mouse connected as a HID-compliant mouse.

I've tried updating my graphics card from the Intel website and looked at Acer's website to see if there is a driver available to run this USB to VGA converter. I've looked into libusb but didn't get that to work. I've done a total system reboot.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to wear out my processors or hard drive or whatever would happen if I just ignored this issue. Is there a converter that won't cause this?

Here is the driver the seller sent:

You say "The driver install though makes my computer CPU usage shoot through the roof..

It looks like a software issue. Some times third party applications which are installed on your computer might also be the cause.

    Try these steps given below..

    Try windows x

    go to device manager

    expand display adapter

right click on display driver - uninstall

    Restart the computer

Now try to check the cpu usage

    It should work fine..

If it is still not working

Uninstall the display adapter from device manager

    Dont restart the computer.

    Go to support.acer.com

    chose your country

type snid or chose your model

    go to drivers

    Install the display driver

Now try to check the cpu usage.

If it is still not working follow the steps given below

Try windows + r - on the run window - type msconfig - click ok

    click on services

check - hide all microsoft services

    click on disable all

    click on startup

    disable all the startup items

click on apply - ok - restart the computer.   Loading process will be very fast now..

Note: You can always enable the services and startup items later or set it to normal startup from selective startup later on the General tab

Now try to check the cpu usage. If everything is working fine then there is no need to follow the steps given below.

If it is still not working then please follow the steps given below

Try windows + r - on the run window - type appwiz.cpl - click ok

it will show you the list of programs

remove all the unwanted third party programs.

    Please don’t remove any drivers.

If you are not sure , please don’t remove it.

Now try to check the cpu usage. If everything is working fine then there is no need to follow the steps given below.

    It will be in progress

    Note:

If you do refresh ( keep my files ) - all your personal files like pictures, music , documents , videos will still be intact.  Only the applications will be lost

If you do reset ( remove everything ) - you are doing a factory default.  It will become like a day one computer.  It will wipe out everything and take your computer to day one like a new computer.

You can also do the recovery in an alternative way..

There are two alt keys on the keyboard. If you look at the bottom row of keyboard you can see the one on the left side of space bar and the other on the right side of space bar. The alt key on the right side will be looking like alt, alt gr or alt car. Turn off the computer. Hold the alt key on the left and tap f10 continuously.  It will go to repair mode. It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot.  If it is not going to repair mode, turn off the computer. Turn on the computer. Hold the right alt key ( alt gr or alt car or alt ) and then tap f10 continuously. It will go to chose an option continue and troubleshoot..

It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc

click on keep my files ( only applications will be lost )  chose your account and type your password  - click on local reinstall - click on reset

    It will be in progress

If the keep my files option is not working

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – just remove my files – click on reset

    It will reinstall windows.

If the just remove my files is not working..

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – Fully clean the drive – click on reset

    It will reinstall windows.

Note: You can also go to chose an option , continue , troubleshoot by holding the alt key + tapping f10 or alt gr + tapping f10 on the keyboard while turning on the computer.  Once you see the troubleshoot option, you can stop tapping the f10 and stop holding the alt key.  Then you can try the keep my files and remove everything ( just remove by files and fully clean the drive ) by following the steps which was mentioned above.

After reinstalling windows try to check the cpu usage. It should work fine.

  • Just as an addition to all the above, Win-11has a new version, the 22H2 OS version 22621.521 and its ironed out allot of the Win-11 problems and made the OS perform better and quicker, this update will update all relevant drivers and chipset drivers etc etc I'm speaking from personal experience, as my laptop a Nitro 5 AN515-56 this update has made it perform at least 10% better. Upgrade to that first and try and see this update fixes your "computer CPU usage shoot through the roof".

Also, don't use any other drivers or drivers that are suggested to you, install the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant and use that for all Intel drivers' updates, especially for your Intel Iris Xe Graphics drivers. Processor usage would also improve if you had more ram and the max ram for your A515-56 as there laptops come with fixed memory of 4GB or 8GB and with the *GB you can have up to 24GB total ram, also, kept your laptop cool and not overworked with 3x monitor and applications opened etc etc.

Windows 11 22H2 is full of bugs: Check them out here (windowsreport.com)

In addition to the above I have Power Button issues with my a515-54G (battery SMART/PSU fails in Battery Save mode) dozens of new critical Event errors/crashes like Windows Night Light option crashes, much slower boot time and major RAM bandwidth reduction. And don't use Intel's DSA this is not for OEM MOBOs like Acer's, if you do want to experiment with these new (buggy) Intel drivers download a compatible driver (.EXE not ZIP) from their catalog manually or better follow others on the web that have successfully tried them out on the very same laptop model that you have, best to stick with Acer’s support drivers and Acer recommended hardware that are tested for your model.😑

You must have installed Win-11 wrongly, and have issues with your A515-54G as doing just an update of Win-11 from MS is not the way to go, you need to do a complete format of the boot drive and a Clean Install, as your problems of “(battery SMART/PSU fails in Battery Save mode) dozens of new critical Event errors/crashes like Windows Night Light option crashes, much slower boot time and major RAM bandwidth reduction” are issues that should not be happening if you did a proper install!

Have you ever used Windows 11 22H2 with all the Windows Updates and all the new Intel, Nvidia drivers? As I have done both, and have used Win-11 since release and have had NO problems and I speak from personal experience, and have had NO issues including with new upgraded 22H2 OS build 22621.608 upgrade (and with all the Intel, NVidia drivers) which you referenced this to “Windows 11 22H2 is full of bugs: Check them out here” that this article goes on with their Installation error 0x800f0806, Nvidia GPU issues, Remote desktop connection issues, Printing issues etc etc which is nonsense and can't be generalized., as they might be applicable to a few PC’s but NOT the majority, as all these sensationalized articles are just that and are allot of nonsense to create an article.

My AN515-56 operates 100% and without any of the mentioned faults NONE in games and everyday usages of Win-11. The only thing that I ever had a problem with is, a Win-11 update driver problem with the AN515-56 Bluetooth (but not with the Wi-Fi new Win-11 Intel drivers, as they work 100%) for this laptops Intel Killer AX1650i card, that only operates with the Acer listed BT Win-11 driver version 22.40.0.2 that works 100%, otherwise this laptop function exceptionally quick (and even quicker since 22H2 upgrade) and I’ve got NO issues and problems, as I use this laptop everyday probably and sometimes 8 hours a day, editing videos, playing games, printing, scanning etc etc I've never ever had a BSOD or a crash of the OS . Cheers and happy computing😀

I Have (see attached), and I am also "testing" Intels's latest display driver with mixed results (sound is great but screen has issues)

Many in our community have already rolled back to W10 21H2 because of W11 issues. Don't believe all the MS hype, investigate, turn on the Kernel performance and Event channels that you may have disabled and you may see the crashes and errors in W11. Intel's latest drivers are buggy, check it out on the web.😉

As I said, and if "Many in our community have already rolled back to W10 21H2 because of W11 issues" does not mean anything, as there are allot of issues with users not installing Win-11 properly. Intel's latest drivers are NOT buggy as I've got all of them installed for my AN515-56 (that is running Intel, NVidia drivers) and its running perfectly with 22H2 OS 22621.608, which I'm trying to outline here but and of course, there could be a minority PC's that might have problems which is usual with any new OS.

I haven't had any problems, and I haven't disabled anything, and what you say "turn on the Kernel performance and Event channels that you may have disabled" I've never done as Win-11 22H2 is running at default settings and as it should be. My motto is "if it aint broke don't fix it or do anything" as my Win-11 is not broken and working 100% and doing everything that I'm using this new OS for perfectly. Keep it simple as that is why imo you are probably getting the problems that you are getting with your A515-54G.

    @StevenGen

It took me a very long time to get my (extinct) Realtek ALC255 chipset, (non-W10) webcam, Office14 and Acrobat prof. 8 to function (more or less) in Windows 10 21H2 so installing W11 OS from scratch on a "latest SSD 2.5" 1TB SATA drive" (however desirable) was not a very realistic option: That's why I opted to upgrade from W10 21H2 to W11 last May and in September to W11 22H2, without any issues; all my Windows and driver updates install flawlessly with minimal efforts and time.

Do I like W11? No better than W10 21H2, Microsoft raised the bar a bit for security with W11, the new Core Isolation process running in the background reduces my RAM speed with 1 Gbyte/sec. (was 28 is now 27 Gbyte/sec.) and Hyper-V slows my boot time to 120 sec. for Restart (was 94 sec.) and 40 sec. for Fast Startup (was 30 sec.) on my mechanical HDD (no SSD installed, 2x4 Gb DDR4 in Dual Mode). I had to tweak W11 registry settings again to get rid of dozens of Event Errors/Warnings, like I used to do in 2015 with the Windows10 anniversary version.

The G (a515-54G) model was the only Acer Aspire 5 laptop in 2019 for sale in the Philippines; I would have preferred the standard model without the NVIDIA GPU.

I got both NVIDIA 31.0.15.1640 (June 2022) for my dedicated Geforce MX250 (uses 25 Watt power) card that I disabled (only have a 3-D Chess game) as it will deplete my battery in 40 minutes and recently installed Intel’s 31.0.101.2111 (July 2022) driver for my TN 200 nits display that causes sometimes glitches and Windows Night Light option that I use a lot crashes but it improved the sound volume (online) of my very basic RTK speakers. This 2022 gen. Intel display/sound driver still uses some older 2019 drivers to get Acer's a515-54G to work in W11 22H2 like Intel's Smart Sound (SST) controller and iigd_ext.inf and I am now thinking of rolling back to my old Acer OEM display driver (2019). I also installed Intel BT and WIFI 2022 drivers (no issues with those in W11).

I do like the latest Edge browser and new MS Media Player in W11 but prefer the "looks and feel" of W10 (File Explorer, taskbar, notification bar, personalization and Start menus). Many of us go out of their way with 3rd party software to make W11 look and function like W10, so what is the point of all this? W10 has only 3 years left so we are forced to upgrade to W11, I am also confident that these bugs I and the online tech media mention will be fixed in future updates (Patch Tuesdays).

BTW very interesting to see that Acer decided to completely drop Intel processors for AMD in their flagship Swift Edge 16" OLED (400 nits, 4K) W11 laptop and replaced a partly (flimsy) plastic body for the light weight fully metal case (half the weight and even thinner than my ultra-thin laptop). All major improvements ("top of the line") and if the price drops and when also available in the Philippines I may go for that real Windows 11 laptop.😀

Puraw, I realise and I appreciate what you are trying to outline in your post above but, w11 is a new beast and you need new hardware, as that is why MS has restricted its compatibility for. If your ram has slowed, then increase the ram and upgrade to DDR4-3200MHz that your A515-54 G can run (do a crucial scan and find out) with the spinner hdd’s they are obsolete with w11, they at best a cheap backup drive as they are too slow and users should wake up to all this and if they want a 2.5” drive, they should only use a 2.5” ssd, as its the only way to go. I’ve got acrobat 9, office 13 running perfectly on my laptop and w11 without any problems. Yes, disabling the MX250 will save you battery but not all users use their laptops on battery, as really a laptop that is used on battery power, is not a gaming or an editing platform for long periods of time as its limited and even when plugged into mains, cannot be used as a hard core editing or gaming platform, which unfortunately, allot of users think that they can use these laptops for, when buying or building a good desktop will do the job 100% better.

I use my laptop mainly as a secondary portable PC but and when I use the laptop for more upper demanding software’s, its always plugged into the mains power and I realise its limits. I’ve always used a desktop for demanding tasks, as a matter of a fact I just built a high end gaming/editing Intel 12th Gen desktop (with an Asus B660 chipset mobo, Intel Core-i9 12900K., AORUS GeForce RTX™ 3080ti XTREME, 64GB DDR5-4800MHz ram and the NZXT Kraken Z73 RGB 360mm AIO cooling) that runs on w11 22H2 (works perfectly with no problems) with all the w11 updates and the w11 NVidia and Intel drivers, as I do all my editing and play all my high end gaming on this desktop, like Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Project Cars 2 and Far Cry 5 that are all very high end gpu demanding games that really a gaming laptop has allot of problems keeping up with for long periods of time at high settings, as they overheat and just can’t keep up with. I also use Adobe Premiere Pro extensively as my wife has a youtube channel that I do all her editing for which is also a very demanding software.

What I’m trying to say is this, that laptops have their limits and far too many users think that getting either a mid to high end laptops, they can just plug it in and use it for everything and any software's that in some cases they are stretching a laptops capability, just because they think that their laptop are a high end have these high end specs, really, their laptops are limited for gaming and editing to what a desktop is, as they will never ever be able to achieve what a desktop can, especially at the high end range.

@StevenGen My original 2133 MHz DDR4 is soldered on the MOBO so adding a 3200 MHz DDR4 module, that you are suggesting, in the only slot available would only increase the RAM capacity not the bandwidth (speed), speed would stay at 2133/2 MHz (uses the minimum bandwidth of the 2 modules). When you duplicate the bandwidth (Dual Channel mode) and all other specs like I did it doubles the speed. I don't need more RAM as W11 consumes 3.4 GB max and I don't do video editing or gaming so 8 GB RAM is plenty for me. But I always like more speed. I agree that the mechanical HDDs are becoming extinct and I would love to try a 2.5" SSD SATA drive ($100 only) if I was not so concerned about my a515-45G SATA interface and limited cooling system (only 1 small fan) the much smaller NVMe M2 SSD generate a lot of heat according to posts on this site even requiring heat sinks or thermal pads and there are many threads with booting issue topics from SSD. I live in the tropics on a farm and I am most of the time outside in the heat so keeping my laptop as cool as possible is my major concern. My next laptop will have a SSD for sure!

Yes I realise the ram issue, as I’ve looked at the crucial scan for your laptop and it suggests the ddr4-3200mhz as an upgrade, maybe I should not have suggested that as I know mixing 2x different rams they work at the lower speed, but crucial recommends that ram for your laptop. My an515-56 has 2x ddr4-3200mhz and it works exceptionally quick at 16gb in dual channels so and if you increase the ram to an additional 1x ddr4-2133mhz as that would help and make the ram work in dual channel, so try that.

My ssd which I run as the main boot drive an 1TB WD ns750 PCIe 3 x4 (that I upgraded) and I use the oem WD ns530 PCIe 3 x4 (that is a slower drive) 512GB within this laptop, I’ve never ever noticed them overheating and/or deteriorating in their performance and this is even t=in the same climatic conditions that your location is as, I live in a tropical Australian climate and I realise the problems with especially a laptop that has very limited cooling and can’t be improved like a desktop can hence and why, I prefer using a desktop as a platform. Anyways, good luck and nice exchanging thoughts with you and keep well and safe always, haven’t been in the Philippines since 1985, lets hope peace prevails in the Philippines and what is happening in the SCS.

This is the speed I have now in Dual Mode (attached)

We lived here for over 20 years: https://tropicalhousegarden.com/building-a-ranch-house-for-under-200000-in-the-philippines/

My next laptop will be DELL XPS 5 IPS 500 nits 4K (UHD) W11 AMD or Acer's Swift Edge that I mentioned, whatever is on sale here in the next 2 years.

    @StevenGen

I solved the issue with my Night Light crashing in W11 22H2 Home, nothing to do with Intel drivers/bugs or Windows updates. I somehow disabled Connected Devices Platform Service and that disables (crashes) Night Light (SettingsHandlers_Display.dll).
