Move the OS/boot SSD from a VN7-792G to a newer Acer?

Hi all - My VN7-792G (i7-6700HQ) motherboard has died - keyboard lights up, dvd drawer opens/closes, HD spins up, etc. - but black screen and HDMI outputs dead. So here's my question - it's kind of time for an upgrade anyway - is there a later Acer that would boot off my VN7 SSD (which is the old M.2 2280 SATA type - not NVMe)? Obviously I would need to replace drivers, but is there a machine that would get going enough for Win10 to do that? 15" or 17" is fine.

I would eventually clone the SATA to a larger NVMe, but another option would be a machine with two M.2's that I could dual boot from?

There seem to be quite a few Acers with two M.2 slots, but I need the ability to read both the old format SATA and newer.

Thanks in advance. Chuck

  • I’ve swapped a 2.5” SSD Samsung 850 EVO boot drive that had Win-10 Pro on it from an Aspire 5750-2414 2nd Gen laptop straight into an Aspire V3-571G 3rd Gen cpu laptop and it worked perfectly and booted straight away like the 2nd Gen was made for the 3rd Gen with the old Win-10.Pro. Seeing that the VN7-792G is 6th Gen cpu I would try an 8th Gen laptop max and see if it will work, can’t guarantee as and if not but, what's wrong with having two laptops as and it the swap doesn't work then, you can always just use the old laptop.
