Is the RAM on my am3470g-uw10p limited only by Win7 limit, or is the 16 GB limit a hardware limit?

I know that Windows 7 Home Premium only supports up to 16 GB of RAM. I have a second partition on my hard drive that has Windows 8 Pro installed, and as I understand it, Windows 8 supports up to 512 GB. I bought my system refurbished through walmart online, and I'm wondering if the 16 GB limit is only because the "resident" OS (Win7 H/P) will not support more than 16, or is that a hardware limitation? As of now, I've boosted it to 12 GB, but I don't want to buy more RAM unless I can seriously boost it. I added two 4 gig sticks to what the system came with, and am contemplating adding two 8 gig sticks to replace the 2 giggers, if it will accept them.

In addition, I am having difficulty getting Ubuntu Ultimate Edition to run at all on this system, which is something I've never encountered before. Does Linux not run under the APU? I cannot get Windows XP to boot up, except in Virtualbox, so I'm presuming that these operating systems don't support the APU.

Help would be greatly appreciated on these questions. BTW, the link for the Linux distro (which many ppl are not familiar with) is http://www.ultimateedition.info  . This guy takes each update to Ubuntu, then adds in all the goodies you can possibly fit into a dvd iso, and saves others the trouble of downloading all the extras of Linux and fixing dependency issues, etc.
