Nitro 5 - No Boot, No Lights (HELP PLEASE!!) - Acer AN515-51

Hello there,

Hoping someone can help me confirm the source of an issue I am having with my Acer AN515-51-71LP (Model N17C1).

Device has been working fine, but all of a sudden this morning it would not power on. Assuming it was a charging issue, plugged into the charger. No lights. When power button is pressed and held, the "POWER" indicator light turns on. Device does not attempt to boot (no fans, no beeps, nothing). I did a power drain in several different manners (removed battery, held power button 30s, wait 5 minutes, plug charger back in THEN battery. Did similar procedure using the button on the motherboard) to no avail. Same issue.

So, I pulled out the multimeter. Confirmed that charger is putting out 19V. Tested charger at the motherboard - it appears to be delivering 19V to the board. So I tested the battery. 0.00V. I thought "great, battery replacement is easy." However, I then realized that the laptop should be powering on without the battery so long as the charger is plugged in and power is getting to the board (which it appears to be). It does not appear to be the power button itself, so the only thing that I can think of is possibly an issue with the motherboard (specifically, circuitry that receives/interprets/transforms the 19V incoming power), OR this device is an odd duck out - the battery really is dead and, for whatever reason, it won't turn on unless battery is detected.

I'm hoping that someone with a little more expertise on this particular product may be able to shed some light. Does the battery need to be installed and have some voltage detected in order for the device to power on at all? Or, is there a component I can test to see if it's a simple issue associated with the incoming power? Or, am I screwed and it's the motherboard and I need a new laptop?

EDIT: I did already try removing the RAM sticks one at a time. Same symptoms.

My suggestion to you if you insist on doing this yourself and you are up to the job? Is to have a look at these guides at "Videos of You Tube Electronic Computer school no power on Laptop" as the main problem could be in the secondary power circuitries of your mobo which need diagnosing and the appropriate components need to be replaced as they either have shorted out or burned out. Sorin from Electronic Computer School is an expert on how to systematically diagnose a laptop power circuitry faults and to pin point where the problems are, which btw is very complex (and if you have no experience then don’t attempt fiddling with these parts as you could cause a short and brick the laptop completely?) its a very tedious job!

Have a look at this clip Most common fault on a Dead Laptop that will guide you through all the steps but, you need the appropriate tools like a microscope, a heat gun, proper soldering solder and flux and of course the appropriate soldering irons tips and the appropriate circuitry parts that are damaged to replace the faulty parts.

If you have all this and the experience to do this job and especially have the tools then attempt the repair but and if you don't, then I suggest that you don't attempt this repair as you could do more damage than fix anything and completely damage your motherboards beyond repair and you will need to replace the mobo with a new one, so take your laptop to an experienced tech that has all the tools and expertise to fix your laptops problems. Good luck and hope that this has helped you out.
