Looking to upgrade from the intel core i3-2370M cpu and 1600x900 display currently installed. CPU socket is PGA989, diplay cable is LVDS 40-pin.

What cpu's are compatible with this motherboard and bios? and would a 1920x1080 display work in this laptop?

Just a bit of history and a guide on the V3-771. The Acer Aspire V3-771 came in different models and with either a 2nd Gen or 3rd Gen Intel cpu's. The top 2nd Gen Intel cpu fitted to your laptop is the i7-Core i7-2670QM and its a Socket Type: Socket G2 don't upgrade to a 3rd Gen cpu as it will not work or be compatible with your laptops overall specs.

What I would suggest you do with your V3-771-6621 since it came with a 2nd Gen cpu is to first update the bios to the last bios titled "Enhance system performance Version: 2.28, be very careful as a bios update can brick your laptop if the laptop gets BSOD's, its bios chip is old and the laptop hasn't been used as updating the bios version could brick your laptop! Update this laptop to the top Acer fitted Core i7-2670QM cpu, then increase its ram to its max 16GB total at 2x 8GB DDR3L-1600Mhz SODIMM's, see Crucial Scan for the V3-771-6621ram and SSD upgrades recommended) but I would upgrade the boot drive to a 2.5" Samsung EVO SSD drive (they are the best and the quickest) as all this would be an appropriate upgrade to the OEM specs that your V3-771-6621 has and will be appropriate especially to its OEM PSU and cooling ability of this laptop. As fitting a 3rd Gen cpu will either not be compatible with your mobo or if it sis? A 3rd Gen cpu will have much more heat and make this laptop overheat and perform less efficiently or not at all.

With the OEM Acer fitted screen for the V3-771-6621, its has a resolution of 1600x900Hz LCD screen, your V3771-6621 has a 30 pin plug for this screen both coming from the LCD screen and on your mobo, you can't changed that mobo plug to a 40 pin that the 1920x1080 resolution screen has (well it can be but with allot of modifications that are not worth doing to this laptop) as it will cost you more than the laptop is worth. But and If your OEM screen is faulty, then replace the screen with only the exact model number fitted to your V3-771-6621 screen (take the screen off and then look at its part number and match that number only) that Acer fitted. Don't get any other screen as even if you search on the web for just the Aspire V3-771-6621 screen, you will get the wrong LCD screen and it could be the wrong screen that wont work. This is what Acer lists ion its SG for the Aspire V3-771 but not your specific V3-771-6621 model its "AUO 17.3”HD 16:9 Color TFT-LCD/ B173RW01 V3".

Good luck and hope this guides you to a successful upgrade of this laptop as these old laptops can be fun to work on and are very useful tools also to have around.

    Thanks for the info.

The screen I have is damaged. It is an Innolux N173FGE-L23 revC3. The panelook website lists this display as lvds 40-pin and I count 40 pins on the motherboard connector.

Interestingly the motherboard pcb has unused pins for 2 additional RAM sticks and a dGPU, I assume the V3-771G model used the same pcb but with the additional components soldered on.

Ok so now you have given me the full specs of your V3-771-6621 so yes and with the type model (which you didn’t say that it had 4x slots for ram) as this mobo can also take a max of 32GB ram (4x8GB into its 4x slots) and it can also rum the higher spec i7 3rd Gen Intel cpu’s, as your i3-2370M cpu and no dedicated gpu, Acer used this lower specs to only reduce the price of this laptop as its mobo specs can be upgraded to the higher spec i3 cpu and Ram (as I did that also to an Aspire 5750-2414 OEM i5-2410M to the i7-2740QM cpu and upgraded the Ram to 16GB and it worked 100%, whiuch btw the Crucial scan also suggested) so upgrade to the 3rd Gen Intel that Acer fits and its 3rd Gen cpu the i7-3720QM that its Intel “Memory Specifications is max 32GB DDR3/L/-RS 1333/1600” that its memory specs are as follows:

    • Maximum total memory size of 32GB into 4x slots (4x 8GB)
    • Slot can be populated with max 8GB modules
    • Ram Supported at DDR III 1333/1600MHz / 1.5V / SDRAM 204 pin DIMM”s memory interface design.

Or if you really want to go all out and want to spend the bucks? Then fit the top 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Core i7-3940XM (but be cautious as your V3-771-6621 hasn’t got a dedicated gpu so upgrading to this cpu your laptops gaming will not improve) but this cpu is the fastest quad-core processor for laptops (at the time of introduction in September 2012) due to its Hyperthreading, its four cores that can handle up to eight threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU and together with the best ram (do the Crucial Scan to find out?) and the addition of a Samsung 870 EVO SATA III 2.5” SSD drive your V3-771-6621 will be the fastest out there and will perform to its peak and max performance.

When you are done upgrading the cpu and screen, do the Crucial System Scan as this scan gives an 100% Guaranteed Compatible matched upgrades for over 125,000 computer systems of what is the best and the most compatible Ram and SSD’s for your laptops hardware specs.

With you change the screen make sure THAT THE MAIN BATTERY IS DISSCONNECTED FROM YOUR LAPTOP as having the battery connected will damage your screen and mobo! With the lcd screen and as I’ve mentioned above, buy the exact lcd screen number "N173FGE-L23 REV.C3'ONLY (manufacturer is not important) have a look at this site that specializes in lcd screens as they have a great range but only buy the REV3 and this is the list for your laptop of the “N173FGE-L23 revC3” which some are NOT REV#3's but this is the appropriate “N173FGE-L23 REV.C3 Replacement LCD Screens from $99.99” for your V3-771-6621 and it’s a 17.3" WideScreen, 40 pin video connector.

They also have a suggestion for your V3-771 for an Upgrade Options:

    •   1080P Upgrade resolution from 1600x900 to 1920x1080

Extended description of upgrade features (it does not mean that the upgrade(s) option(s) shown above include all of these features):

IPS (In-plane switching) - Better viewing angles because of a different way of constructing the pixels. Colours will no longer shift if you look at your display from the side or from above.

IPS Professional Colours - A wider range of physical colours reproducible by the LCD. A must-have for professional photography, print and publishing, available to you at a fraction of the cost.

120Hz - A maximum refresh rate of the display (most commonly 60Hz) dictates how many pictures your display can show per second. With a 120 Hertz upgrade, your new display can deliver double the frames each second for smoother motion and a much more immersive visual experience.

120Hz IPS - All of the advantages of a 120Hertz upgrade combined with wide viewing angles and improved colours range.

Good luck and happy upgrading :D

    Updating this for posterity.
    Installed intel i7-2760QM CPU, 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz Crucial RAM, AUO B173HW01 V4 1920x1080p 90%NTSC 60Hz display, and 500GB Samsung 870 EVO SSD. No issues under windows 10 and BIOS v2.28.

Weirdly, there are only 2 RAM slots but there are pins on the pcb for 2 more and hwinfo64 detects them. I suspect they would function if someone wanted to solder the headers on but 16GB RAM is more than enough for my needs. Everything worked out of the box but one of the drive bays was only 3GB/s, the other is 6GB/s so had to make sure SSD went in the faster one. Also I had to slightly modify the 2.28 BIOS files to get it to install since I was updating from v1.14.

The original single heat pipe heatsink/fan assembly struggles a bit with the higher wattage CPU under heavy load. To help, I ordered the 771G heatsink that has dual heat pipes and additional heat sink for the dGPU that my board does not have. Hopefully this will add some thermal mass and improve heat transfer.
