eMachines final bios update? (Ancient hardware) WinXP M6805

I've got an old WinXP M6805 that I'd like to bring up Linux on.

The easiest/best solution for me would be a "live boot" thumb drive. But it seems the laptop's bios doesn't recognize it as bootable, despite my having "Removable Devices" ay the top of the boot list.

Is there a newer bios which would enable this? Or do I have to settle for installing from an actual external hard drive or CD-ROM?

IIRC that is vintage 2004 or 2005. In those days there was no UEFI boot environments, so you'll have to have a live boot setup for MBR instead of GPT. Without that the USB drive won't be recognized as bootable.
