Nitro 5 Keyboard backlight settings

I recently used FN + F9 to turn my backlight on.  But then it seemed as though my only options were on or off.  It did finally seem to reset itself.  I do generally prefer the light to only come on when activated by keystroke.  I'm a little leery now of using this feature again.  I don't want to permanently disable keystroke activation just keep it on in low light sometimes.  Can someone clue me in as to what I'm doing wrong?  Am I misunderstanding what is happening?

Correct. FN+F9 is just a simple toggle backlight on-off-on switch. Nothing more. That toggle key combo shouldn't affect keystroke backlight activation feature when it's toggled on. However, the activation feature can usually be disabled in the BIOS menu, so the backlight  remains on all the time if FN+F9 is toggled on. And off all the time if FN+F9 is toggled off.
