Are you talking about the new one?

    >>>I'm returning drive.  Can't find any limiting info on compatibility for WD drive.  I ordered a drive identical to original.>>>A replacement Toshiba drive like the one I removed from the old laptop cost about $33.00. >>>

I thought you already returned the WesternDigital and ordered a new $33 Toshiba like the old? If the $33 Toshiba is new, it might also have to be initialized  in Control Panel's disk management application before it can be used. Check the new Toshiba out on a USB port on another machine before you install it inside the e5-571. Just make sure it's initialized and  can be used from the USB port.

I did order one.  It has not arrived yet. I will follow your advice.

OK.  New drive arrived.  Plugged into adapter of a working laptop.  Laptop seems to recognize the new disk, but there is no directory to display.  Is there something I need to do to enable access to the new HDD.  Toshiba 1TG. MQ01ABD100V

Press WIN+R. Enter 'diskmgmt.msc'. Post a screenshot of result.

The new disk does not appear readable.  I was interested to see if I could access it on my working laptop.  But when I do, it appears to be unreadable.  And I recall that you said this would be the case.  Is there some initialization process that needs to occur.

How do you have it connected to your working laptop? If it's thru a USB port, then press WIN+R on your working laptop. Then enter 'diskmgmt.msc'. Post a screenshot of result.

I did that and got the following action: Disk Management with Disk 2.  Basic 931.51 GB online - 931.51 unallocated

I think I've got it attached.

The new disk2 looks fine. It's already initialized and fully unallocated. You can try to make it a primary partition under the ACTION tab. Otherwise should be about ready for an operating system to be installed. So connect it to the e5-571. Then boot from the Windows installation USB stick by tapping F12 on startup. See if it can find the new drive.

Attaching the new drive to the working laptop, I thought I would be able to display the directory.  I can't seem to do it.

No. If you want to see it on the working laptop, you must format it to NTFS, and assign it a drive letter like E : or F : in disk manager. Then you can see it in FIleExplore as an empty E or F drive. You can do that if you want. But you don't have to. You should be able to connect it as-is to the E5-571 and the USB Windows installation stick should find it and install Windows on it.

OK.  I think I am about to give this project up.  The cables on the old laptop are giving me a fit and I don't have the dexterity I had when younger.  Thanks for your help!

Maybe. But the components & screws are  smaller, shorter & harder to handle than when you were younger too. Without jewelers or watchmakers tools, tweezers and lighted headband magnifier, it's nearly impossible. :o
