Brand new Chromebook, fan keeps running in short bursts.

I just bought a new ACER chromebook.  I love it.  However the fan keeps coming on in short bursts.  Is this normal?  It's a little loud.  Are there any updates I could install or settings I can change to make it stop.  Thanks!

    Hi @StaciPK

If the fan runs in the laptop that totally depend on the application that you use. But if it still happens in lighter tasks. Then you can try yo do a power wash to check if that makes the laptop better.

    Steps for power wash:

    Factory reset your Chromebook
    1. Sign out of your Chromebook.
    2. Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
    3. Select Restart.
    4. In the box that appears, select Powerwash. Continue.
    5. Follow the steps that appear and sign in with your Google Account.
But you will loose all the information locally stored in the laptop.

Hope it will help you in some way.

Yes it's pretty normal for the newest models. Google is using a different fan speed table than they used with last years models, so it makes larger jumps in speed.

The same happens with my 515, even when it is at rest and under almost no load. The comment about Google using a different fan speed table is interesting, but I would have thought that it would have to be doing a reasonable amount of work to call the fans in like that. I have had this Chromebook since about May but it has only been doing this over the last few weeks.

I believe the issue is in the start/stop values in the fan table. They move from one speed to another too soon after reaching the threshold. So the fan speeds up when a certain temperature is reached, but drops down again at too high of a falling temp, leading to noise cycling. If they let it fall further before slowing the fan it would stay at one speed longer.
