Acer PH317-53 case crack

I have Acer PH317-53 that developed a couple hairline cracks on the bottom of the case. This laptop is used as a desktop replacement so other than hitting the vents with some compressed air once a month it never leaves the desk. I noticed the first crack in late February and another develop in March. I initially thought that the battery had swelled up putting pressure against the case I so took it in to a local shop, they noted that battery had not swelled and the cracks were not visible on the inside of the case. I'm not sure how you can get a crack on the outside and not inside but that's what it did. After talking with the shop they thought it might have been caused by heat, as I mentioned a new game I got was causing the fans to really speed up. Their recommendation was to use a laptop cooling pad, so I picked one up however after a month I noticed the second crack developing so I'm not so sure about that. That said even with the cooling pad the fans were still very running fast. Its out of warranty at this point but before I find a store to replace the bottom cover I would like to know if anyone else had this issue and if so what they did to help correct it.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply but doesn't answer my questions. Unfortunately at this moment its my only computer so can't afford to ship it off to Acer for a month for them to have a look at it. On a side note is it typical to have lost about 33% capacity battery in the past 27 months, it stays powered by the outlet in with the exception of power failures and monthly cleaning.

Unfortunately the plastic compositions used in today’s laptops are a lottery and some are of poor quality which every consumer has to put up with as you must have been unlucky. Allot of laptops also have problems with bottom case hinge screw securing points that deteriorate and dislodge the top cover hinges and crack, that causes damage to the top cover also, so be aware of that also.

Seeing that your laptop is out of warranty you can’t hold Acer responsible, the easiest and best solution is to buy a new bottom case now as the longer you leave it the more this will crack but and take it from me, replacing a bottom case is a big job so be prepared :D:smile: also see here “Acer Predator Helios PH317-53 PH317-54 Bottom Base Housing Cover Black” on eBay which is USD $52.00 (or AUD $69.00) as there is one on eBay Australia (I would suggest that you buy it before its gone, as these cases are pretty hard to find, especially with all the problems with shipping from China) and replace your current cracked case with a new one asap. Also be aware that these replacement cases are not OEM and you will have to inspect its vent slots holes as allot of them that I’ve bought their vents spaces were blocked and needed the blocked vents plastic to be popped out as the quality control was not 100% and this could lead to your laptop overheating. Also repaste your CPU/GPU with a high quality paste like the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme and make sure that your fans are working 100% so inspect those too.

Thanks StevenGen for all the helpful information, I talked with a local repair shop that could do same day repair however the bottom was backordered with their supplier, so if I can get it myself now I may just do that along with replacing the battery. I will also keep an eye on the hinge area for problems, looking at the photos you provided both of my cracks developed in that empty area in the front left region. I will also ask them about repasting the CPU/GPU with a high quality paste and check the fans while they are in there.
