My new laptop has stopped recognising USBs. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the USB drivers but no luck. I have my wireless mouse receiver plugged in and this works without issue. Any suggestions (that don't involve reloading the software) gratefully received.

Further to the above issue, I am receiving an error message when I view the device in Device Manager:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

The driver could not be loaded because a previous version of the driver is still in memory.

This message appears with any USB that I connect.

Reboot and try again, that should remove the driver from memory. What device is showing the symptoms?

Thanks. The same error was occuring with 4 separate USB drives including one new one. I eventually reset the laptop after backing up and this cleared the problem.....for now.

    Hi @dcmcg140464,

This issue can be caused if any of the following situations exist: The currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt. Your PC requires an update for issues that may conflict with a USB external hard drive and Windows. Windows may be missing other important updates hardware or software issues.
