Are the speakers on the PH 315-54 quite bad?

I have recently purchased the PH 315-54 and I find that the volume on these speakers is quite low. I practically cant even hear the average youtube video unless everything around me is perfectly quiet. I have the Helios 300 from 2019 and the speakers on that put out much more volume.

Is it possible that I have a dud or that my speakers aren't working correctly?

Check your speaker settings by right clicking the speaker icon on the right taskbar and use the Troubleshooter or the Open Volume Mixer or Sound Settings and go through these settings steps to fix these problems. Also and remember that these laptops are not your high end HiFi rigs so don't expect much from them, what I would do is either get a pair of high end ear buds or get yourself a good brand headphone with adaptive noise cancelling that will give you high end HiFi digital quality audio sound, that is what I've done and very rarely use the laptop speakers.

yea, using headphones is the only way ive been able to hear any youtube content.  just not sure why the amp on these speakers is so much worse than the model 3 years ago.  but thanks for reply
