I recently found out that one of my friend's laptop boot on its own when he opens the lid (Dell G30. I tried to make my laptop do the same but didn't find any way to do this. I came up across several terms while searching for a way such as ACPI lid and power and lid option in advanced power setting(This option is not available on my laptop). How do I do it for my laptop? Or is it that only some companies or models of laptop have this feature?(My laptop is ACER ASPIRE A514-54G(Acer Aspire 5 11th gen i5 processor model with windows 10 in it.))

  • Hi,
I think your friend use Sleep mode, go to Power Options and select "Choose what closing the lid does" in the left pane, select "Sleep" in the right pane for "When I close the lid".

I use a Dell laptop and an Acer laptop too.

As @brummyfan2 said, your friend is using sleep mode with the Dell laptop, and you can use sleep mode too, BUT...

What you suspect is also true.

My old Dell laptop, using slower CPU and just a SATA3 SSD, and I just close the lid to let it goes to sleep mode until I open it the next time( may be as long as several days). Everytime I open the lid again from sleep mode this Dell laptop shows the Windows login screen right away without delay, so it is like no bootup time needed.

For my Acer A515-46-R14K, if I close the lid (to sleep mode) and open it again within a few hours, I can get to the login screen right away, just like my old Dell laptop.

However, if I close the lid overnight and open it again, the Acer laptop will do a regular boot. Even though this Acer laptop has faster CPU and x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, it will still need like 6-10 secoonds bootup time.

So, I'll say different companies will still have different effects with the same kind of Win 10 OS feature.

    Hi @imliwiese92,

    • Press Windows Key + X.
    • Select on Control Panel.
    • Click on Power Options. On the left, click on "Choose what closing the lid does". Click on the drop down menu for "When I close the lid" and choose "Sleep" or "Hibernate.

@imliwiese92 it seems that Acer does not have laptop boots when the lid is opened function except from waking up from sleep mode.

@ttttt I think that your laptop goes to hibernate after like 180 mins by default. This will save the laptop battery life especially when you are going outside don't have any place to charge. You can extend the time or disable it in power plan setting, sleep, hibernate after. Putting 0 min is disabling hibernating.

I have never set any of my PC to hibernation mode. Probably Acer's default setting put it in hibernation, not my choice.

Also, every time I open the lid again after a few hours, I have to press the power button to turn it on like I did a regular shutdown before closing the lid.

@ttttt hibernation is set to 180 min after the pc went to sleep by default so you can try to disable that function.

I never allowed Hibernate sleep and Hibernate After are set to Never for both battery and plugin.

So, I'll still say it is the Acer setting, not mine.
