Memory problem on Acer Aspire 6 (A615-51-881T)?

I have added 8GB of RAM to my Acer Aspire 6, making 12GB in total. However, whenever I do any task that uses "more memory than normal" (unable to be specific here, but see my comments in the next paragraph), the laptop grinds to a halt. The next reboot then takes 10-15 minutes or more. Eventually the machine settles down and behaves normally again. This behaviour is certainly indicative of a memory problem, but 12GB should be more than adequate.

When I replicate the same tasks on my desktop machine which has a mere 4GB RAM I do not encounter any problem.

Please, can anybody shed light on what is going on here, and what I can do about it? Thanks.

When you remove the 8GB sodimm, how does the machine behave? Because your mainboard bus is an early DDR4 release, you should probably use 2400MHz Micron or Crucial DDR4 sodimms even though higher frequencies should downshift to accomodate the mainboard bus. Sometimes they don't downshift too well.
