After I transfer the SSD from my old computer (Aspire S7, mfg 2013) to my new one (Aspire 515-45-R1YC), will the software run without reinstallation?
In particular, will MS Office (single machine license) need to be reinstalled?

Some sofftware , particularly older software, that have their own subdirectories with all required files should work fine. Newer software usually won't work since they usually also rely on built-in Windows library files. MSOffice in particular has it's own setup so it will likely have to be re-installed. But that should not be a problem even with the single machine license version still on the mSATA card since it won't be active after you re-install Office. However, all the Office Word, Excel etc files that you created and that are still on the mSATA card should still all be valid and accessible after the Office re-installation

PS: You also have the option of installing LibreOffice for Windows freeware instead of MSOffice since it handles just about all versions of MSOffice documents and spreadsheets all the way back to MS Office95 . LibreOffice is all I use now on both my Windows and Linux machines when creating and editing MSOffice documents, spreadsheets, presentations and databases

Just a copy does not transfer links (see Settings>Apps>Defauts). A Clone does transfer links.

Its not a copy. Its the disk in my current computer that I'm going to move to the new one, so it has everything on it that my current computer needs to run the software. In other words, its even closer than a clone to the original disk, because it is the original disk!  Isnt that at least as good as a clone?

Please!!! Do NOT try to clone the old mSATA's boot drive onto your new Aspire's boot drive!!! You will just mess up your new Aspire's boot drive!

OK, have been looking back and on the now understand what is going on better. First, open a CMD window and run "slmgr /dli" if it has retail version and licensed to your name there should be no issue. If it says OEM and does not have your name, there may be an issue since the OEM or Volume License is often tied to the original motherboard. Check this first.

My new computer already has a SSD in it.  Im just moving another one from my old computer into an available empty bay in the new one.  The SSD that is already in my new computer has Windows 10 on it, already installed and able to run the computer. So, I don't need to clone the OS from my old drive. I'll probably just delete the Windows directory on it once I have it in the new computer.  Thanks to you both, Padgett and JackE, for your responses.
