Hello all! I'm looking to change out some of the internals of my Orion 3000, and one of those things is probably the processor as I'm looking to try some higher end games. Is it possible to upgrade the processor on this motherboard or would it be better to start fresh with a custom build?

Hello all! I'm looking to change out some of the internals of my Orion 3000, and one of those things is probably the processor as I'm looking to try some higher end games. Is it possible to upgrade the processor on this motherboard or would it be better to start fresh with a custom build?

Because of your motherboards chipset of the Intel B360 it doesn’t support any higher spec CPU's than 8th Gen, you can't upgrade to the 9th Gen. The highest spec CPU that you can upgrade to is the Core i7-8086K that has 6 cores, 12 threads, 4 GHz normal frequency and up to 5 GHz turbo at L2 cache of 1.5MB and L3 cache of 12MB with a TDP of 95W and an upgrade possibility is 64% to an i7-8700. This upgrade will not give you a great performance increase to your OEM i7-8700 3.2 to 4.6 GHz. You can’t upgrade to a 9th Gen CPU as you need a new motherboard. Best is to upgrade the motherboard but that will mean that you forgo certain aspects of the design of the front PO3-00’s front panel peripherals. The top and best options including the upgrade to the i7-8086K is to upgrade the GPU from the top of the range OEM GTX 1070 8GB to a GTX 3070 but then you will have to upgrade the PSU to a 750W as the 3070 cant run on a 500W PSU that your PO3-600 came with and also increase the RAM to the max 64 GB (4x 16GB) at DDR4-2666MHz 288 pins DIMM's and a top performing NVMe M.2 drive, as all that will improve the performance considreably.

Best and what I would do is build a new system all together of a Ryzen 9 or a 7 or a 12th Gen Intel system that has superior performance. Btw I just built a Ryzen 9 5950X with 64 GB DDR4-4000MHz RTX-3070 and its unbelievable and the advantages are so superior that its not even worth comparing to anything of the Intel 8th, 9th, 10th or the 11th Gen systems as the Intel 12th comes close and could be even superior, so these are your choices but, it will depend on your budget?

Also, be aware that an i7-8086K upgrade will require a cooling revamp, that uses more power than the stock chips.
