Hi guys

Quick question? So my laptop has been telling me for a good while that the battery needs replacing, as i have always had it plugged in when i use it i have never bothered changing it.

The charger lead dropped out the other day and i didnt realise, i was using the laptop and it then went off, screen went black but all the little lights were still there and it stayed like that for about 5 minutes and then went off completely. I realised the lead had come out and just thought the battery had run out so thought id just plug it in next time i was going to use it and it would be fine, 2 days later plugged it in and nothing happened no lights showing its plugged in or anything, and when i pressed the power button all i got was it flashing 5 times but thats it.

I removed battery and charger, held power button for 30 secs to try to reset but still no different, re-seated ram and checked hardrive and all is ok.

Does anyone know if the battery is totally dead to the point it will no longer hold a charge would that stop the laptop starting even with a charger plugged in?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

    Hi @Dan100,

    Try to do power drain,

    1. Shutdown the unit.
    2. Unplug the cables connected to the unit.
    3. At bottom of the unit there will be a small tiny pin hole with a battery symbol close to it. Take a pin or a paper clip insert into it you feels like pressing a button hold it for 20-30 seconds.

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

I have searched  everywhere and cant find anything like what you're describing. Is it possible this model doesnt have that?

    Thanks

  • Try resetting the battery: turn off the computer, unplug the power adapter, unplug the lithium battery and press the power button for sixty seconds.

  • When you unplug the battery and plug in only the power adapter, do the power and battery lights turn on or flash?

So this morning i thought i would try again with the laptop before taking in to a shop and when i plugged the charger in i got the orange charging light come on on the front of the laptop.I left it for a few minutes and then tried to start the laptop, it kind of went to start but didnt actually start up, i did this a few times but still i couldnt get it to boot up.

The orange charging light at the front eventually disappeared again and hasnt come back, just for the fun of it i thought id remove the hard drive and then try and start it and  see what happened, when i tried to start the laptop  would you believe it started up, while i was on the screen that was telling me there was no operating system installed i plugged the hard drive back in and it all came back to life and i managed to get back on to my desktop.

But i have no idea if this new replacement battery is any good or not, it doesnt show on the laptop as charging even though i have the charger plugged in and when i hover over the battery icon on my desktop it says something like 98hrs 40mins remaining and says the battery is 28% charged, it hasnt moved in the last hour and still says the same now, the battery icon is showing the battery as nearly empty but so far it hasnt run out, do you think the new battery is faulty? it is just a copy and i know the charger is good.

Took laptop into my local shop today and at first he said it was the charger, but soon changed his mind, he then said it was the port for the charger, after about half hour he phoned me and said he replaced the charging port but it still didnt work, he then claimed he would try something else, replace a chip or something like that and would let me know how he got on, he called back and said it was sorted out and to come and collect it.

When i went to collect it he plugged a charger in to show me it was all working and the laptop was still not charging the battery? he said i could still use it with just the power lead plugged in all the time and just to leave the battery out, i only use it plugged in most of the time anyway so i wasnt bothered about having it plugged in. Basically now the charger icon is on my desktop showing the laptop plugged into the mains but there is a red x as there is no battery present, if i connect the battery, the battery shows but no charger icon shows as it wont charge the battery, once battery is removed charger icon comes back. You can use it on mains power, or if you have a full battery then you can use that until it dies but you cant have both....any ideas??
  • Did the technician check the battery connectors?

Yes he said he did, he also said that he thought it had water/liquid damage inside but this has never had any water or liquid damage while i have had it. I think he was just making things up as he didnt know what it was.

It sounds like you are not far from wrong there... What battery did you put in and where did you buy it? It sounds as if the new battery isn't the right one for your system or just has bad cells in it. The battery for your TravelMate P253-M should be equivalent to the Acer part number: BT.00603.124, BT.00604.049, BT.00605.072, BT.00606.008, BT.00607.126, BT.00607.127 or BT.0060G.001. As you can see Acer bought these from many different vendors during the life of the laptop. There's nothing special about the battery though, so any of the six cell batteries in that form factor ought to work.
