Hi
SSD m.2 upgrade (Sata, NVMe PCIe x2, or NVMe PCIe x4)
Need to add SSD to laptop. Just have Hard drive now and very slow.
M.2 slot has the notch on the right (Mkey) So looks like NVMe PCIe x4 will fit.
Just want to check that other things (chipset cpu) etc will support.
Spec below says PCIe 3 max link x2, does that limit me to a PCIe3 drive like this one?
"Samsung 980 500 GB PCIe 3.0 (up to 3.100 MB/s) NVMe M.2 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-V8V500BW)"

You can install a Samsung 980 x4 NVMe SSD at the M.2 slot, but it will run at x2 speed, that is, less than 1,700 MB/s read. It is hard to find x2 NVMe SSD in the retail market now, such as WD SN 520, otherwise it will be perfect without waste.

Anyway, the 1,700 MB/s is still tripled the speed pf SATA3 SSD, and much faster than spinning HDD. You will be happy to use the the NVMe as the boot drive.

Perfect thanks very much. Couldn't find a consistent answer anywhere but that explains it.

You are welcome ! Get a cloning program to clone the contents to the new drive and enjoy it. You will appreciate how much time you save each year with the new drive.
