Hi all, looking for your valued insights! I have an Acer Aspire S7-392-6402, old I know, but I love it.

The SSD has died on me, and I want to replace it. I understand that the windows license key may be embedded in the BIOS, recall that these came with windows 8!

How do I install windows with a new SSD using the old windows license? Possible?

Thanks!

If Windows license is embedded, then it is easy:

    1) Go to Microsoft site, by using a FAT32 USB flash drive of at least 8GB  to download Windows Media Creation Tool for the the latest Windows 10 ( I believe it is 21H1 version).  I believe you may have a 64-bit Win 8 Home, so you may want a 64-bit Win 10 Home version.

Take this as the chance to upgrade from Win 8 to Win 10

    2) When power off, take out bad SSD and replace it with the new drive. Put the Windows installation flash drive to a USB port ( if you have USB 3.0 port, use it, will be faster)

    3) Power up, when bootup, hold down Fn key and keep tapping the F12 key until you see the boot menu

    4) The installation flash drive will be the only bootable device by that time (if no bootable DVD present), so highlight the drive and hit enter to  boot from there

    5) Follow the instructions for Windows 10 activation. When asked for product key, you can answer "I don't have one", or Windows 10 will not even ask you for that. Windows 10 should be able to get the embedded license automatically and recognize it as Digital License, nothing needed to be done.

    Thanks!

I will buy the SSD now and give an update once everything is installed. Glad to hear that Win 10 will recognize the windows license when it was originally Win 8.

Just a friendly reminder. Do not forget to disconnect the laptop battery when you change the SSD.
