Aspire TC-895-UA92 not playing DVDs

I recently bought an Acer Aspire with DVD/CD player installed, but this is my first computer with Windows 10. Previously I could just pop in a DVD and Media Player would start the disc. All that happens on this machine is the disc whirs for a bit, then nothing. I found Media Player, and launched it, but have no luck in loading the DVD.

Device manager shows the drive as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GUE1N

What am I missing folks?

Thanks

Odd, Im supprised it's been removed! You could try installing VLC player . It's a free media player with support for pretty much everything but blu ray disks :)

Are you using the DVD in its upright position, probably it is not engaging  right. Try put it on the side.
If that is not the cause, open up the PC and check connections.

Also, you should do the settings :

    Control Panel->Hardware and sound->Auto Play
Under the CD section, choose whether you want to auto play after CD insertion

If problem persist, return it or contact Acer for repair.

Microsoft removed the video codecs for playing DVDs sometime between Windows 7 and Windows 10. They'd been paying the royalties for it and wanted to remove that cost. The assumption is that if you want to play DRM protected DVD videos you will buy a software package that does that rather than require the OS to handle it. You can play all other videos, just not the DRM protected ones.

Thanks to all for your replies!

The answer about Microsoft saving costs on licensing makes perfect sense, unfortunately.

I downloaded the VLC player, and it works great, but I still can't seem to get it to auto-play on disc insertion. Tried the control panel, and looked at help from VLC, but no joy. Any thoughts?

Have you tried change the settings under the DVD Section?

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 do NOT have built-in DVD player --- you had to pay extra money for various Windows Media Editions in the past.

Windows 7 was the only Windows OS in the last 20 years to have included a software DVD player.

If your Acer desktop PC came with DVD burner, then Acer may have included PowerDVD or WinDVD with your computer.

When you say tried the control panel, do you mean the start -> auto play one, or start -> control panel -> Hardware and sound -> Autoplay, it should look like this:

Its meant to be that setting, so if its not working it couble be a bit of a bug
