Aspire 7720Z: Can't connect/detect to wired LAN

My laptop, Aspire 7720Z with Vista home premium OS purchased in 2008, stopped connecting to my wired network through TimeWarner. TimeWarner came to check and the tech's computer could connect with the provided ethernet wire and their modem but mine cannot dectect the network and states computer not close to "Dianex" (or something similarly named) network. The computer won't even connect to a wireless network even though it shows a list including the TimeWarner tech's Sprint wireless network which we tried connecting to without success. Called the TimeWarner tech support and they think my network connector (is that what it is called?) got deleted or somehow got corrupted and I need to reinsatll it. How can I do that when I cannot even connect to the internet and go to the site? What is the name of that driver in the system? From what I could gather from the side of the box it came in, I have a 56K modem and a wireless LAN 802.11b/g. It has a 2G memory with a pentium CPU. I am not at all computer savvy. How do I do reinstall it? My computer is out of warranty so Acer won't help unless I pay which I don't have the means to do at this time. Please help Smiley Sad
