TC-895 SSD (NVME)

Hi
I am waiting on delivery of a Acer TC-895. I know there are several different specs and as best as I can find out it is defined as DT.BETEK.001, an i5-10400 with a 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD.

I have discovered the murky world of (I think) M.2 SSD's and I am a bit confused as to what will fit in this TC-895, I think it will take a Gen 3 x4 2280 NVME drive - is that correct or if not what would be best.

Thanks

  • Hi,
Yes, you can use a M.2 NVMe SSD Gen3x4 in this model, like Samsung 970 Evo Plus, XPG SX8200, WD SN750 etc.

Note that you already have an M.2 SSD installed, the 128GB SSD listed in the specs. You can replace that with a larger one but make sure you have the stuff to clone it to the new one, typically that means you need a USB case for an M.2 NVMe drive...

The 128GB the comes with your TC-895 is most likely will be a x2 M.2 NVMe SSD. If you want higher capacity and higher speed, you can replace it with a x4 M.2 NVMe with higher storage capacity and migrate W10 and data to it.
I personally retain the original x2 M.2 NVMe SSD that came with my TC-885 as a backup to the x4 M.2 NVMe SSD that I upgraded to.

I made an assumption (I'll never learn) that the 128GB drive would be a SATA drive - I am slightly dismayed at Acer for 'hiding' the spec of these PC's, bearing in mind that, especially currently, they will be bought over the internet it would be very helpful to have a detailed spec - hopefully when it arrives today I will find out precisely how is is made up.

I have bought a Samsung EVO Plus 500Gb and was planning on installing W10 from scratch on it - I'll remove the 1TB and 128GB drives, I tend to use a NAS for my main storage.

If the TC-885 can support 2 M.2 NVMe drives, can I 'assume' that the TC-895 can as well - hadn't even considered that!

    Thanks for your help

As far as I know some models of TC-895 come with M.2 NVMe SSD , and some come with M.2 NVMe SSD plus a spinning SSD, like what you ordered.  Once you get your TC-895, you can check out what kind of storage devices you get from the BIOS.
One thing that I would like to point out is that even with just a x2 M.2 NVMe SSD, it is like 10 times faster than a spinning HDD or NAS storage. With a x4 one, you can expect even doubling the speed. Once I used a M.2 NVMe SSD for booting my W10, I won't get back to spinning HDD as a boot drive anymore. However, I also use spinning HDD for backup data and system image purposes. This is one good way to retain some usages for those old spinning HDDs rather than throw them away.
