Nitro 5 (AN517-52-52T3) internet speed has slowed drastically

Hi, pardon the long post, but I've tried a lot of things already, which I'd like to go through.

I have month-old Nitro 5 (AN517-52-52T3) which started off getting excellent wifi speeds, sometimes above 200 Mbps, but within a week I was only getting 80-90, and soon in the single digits -- often below 5 Mbps. Upload speeds have usually been normal (9-11 Mbps) but sometimes they dropped below 1. Occasionally the speed popped up to the 200s or the 90s, but then dropped. My previous laptop only had the usual fluctuations. The laptop is usually no farther than 10' from the router, with no obstructions, and the signal is strong.

I've tried all the suggestions at https://us.answers.acer.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/32747 under "Able to connect but connection drops or speed is slow," except for reinstalling the drivers. According to the Device Manager the drivers are all up to date. I downloaded the driver package anyway, but there are no instructions on how to install them (the link on the page leads to a dead end, and there's no README in the package). (Incidentally, the Device Manager doesn't show any faults anywhere.)

Occasionally the ethernet connection has dropped to single digits or low two digits too. Another oddity is that at one point the laptop wouldn't connect to the ethernet at all. I think a restart fixed that.

I shut down the laptop when I'm done for the day, so I know a restart doesn't fix the problem. I have restarted the modem and router multiple times, and I spent a long time working on the problem with my ISP. I can connect another laptop and my phone to the wifi and get good to excellent speeds, so it's definitely the laptop. I have tested with the VPN on, loaded but inactive, not loaded on startup, and entirely uninstalled. I have run virus scans with both F-Secure and Malwarebytes.

One thing that helped -- temporarily -- was resetting the network settings. After that I got excellent speeds again ... for two days. It declined the next day, and the day after that (today) the wifi speed went back to below 5 Mbps. I tried resetting the network settings again, which at first didn't help, but after switching the the ethernet and then switching back to the wifi, I got speeds in the 70-80 range. But within an hour that fell again to the single digits.

Acer phone support suggested that I reset the laptop to its factory state. I've had computers for over 30 years and not once has resetting the entire thing done more than waste my time: it was always a matter of tracking down a setting or some other conflict. Given the way the wifi speeds degraded over time, I think resetting the laptop would lead to the same result.  Also, with all the things I've already tried, I doubt that sending the laptop in for repairs would do anything besides make my work difficult for a month.

I've added 8GB memory to the original memory (DDR-4 3200), and installed the HDD from my old laptop. But that was after the wifi problem started.

Looking forward to any ideas!
