I have an Aspire 5, A515-54-55UU. There are white, gray, and black vertical bars showing up at startup only. There seems to be talk around here about updating the Nvidia card driver, but I want to make sure it also applies to my case before doing anything. Thank you.

A WinUpdate likely changed some device drivers that caused this behavior. Since this doesn't seem to be a disabling issue or noticeably affect performance, if it were mine I would NOT try to restore the system, update any drivers or BIOS versions from the ACER driver download site (could open a can of worms) or  temporarily block the 12/28 update with Windows update hide tool.   I suspect that the behavior will simply  disappear when some future update is installed. However, since it's not my machine, it's up to you to decide if it bothers you enough to take any action. Be aware however that the 12/28 restore point will be automatically deleted by the WinUpdate process within a few weeks. Jack E/NJ

Turn the machine  off. Then remove  the charger. Insert a paperclip into the battery reset pinhole for about 30 seconds. Plug the charger back in. Wait till the battery charge LED turns from solid orange to solid blue. Turn the machine back on. Jack E/NJ

Press WIN+R. Enter 'msinfo32'. Post screenshot of result if possible. What are the current BIOS and VBIOS versions? Do the bars persist and require re-booting or does the screen normalize after a few moments? Jack E/NJ

They dont persist. The Acer logo shows, the bars show and disappear within a second or so and the rest is normal. The bars are about a quarter of an inch in thickness and filled, not like the coloured dotted lines Ive been reading about here

Open Control Panel. Search 'restore point'. Click 'create a restore point' in the left pane. If System Protection is enabled in the box that pops up, click System Restore button. Click next. Do you see an automatic restore point with a date/time stamp immediately before this started happening? Jack E/NJ

JackE a miracle just happened, turns out Windows was due for an update. I passed it through and just rebooted my computer to have a look, no bars. Thanks again for your help and patience :)

Came sooner than expected. Make sure System Protection is still turned on in Control Panel's restore point app just in case an update turns it off when you're not looking.   :)   Good luck. Jack E/NJ
