If anyone is able to give me any help on this at all I would be so grateful.

Basically my laptop (running Windows 10 btw) froze, so I rebooted it.  But on starting up it opened to a blank login screen that has the date and time but nowhere to enter login info. No key combinations work to farther the process.

I tried every single option available to me from the logo screen on this link:
https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-10/

Shift restarting does not open advanced start up options.  Interrupting windows 10 boot process 3x or more times does not open it either.

I can't get past the blank login screen to access start menu or command prompts.

The most I got was holding down f2 on startup opened a setup utility screen but I couldn't do anything useful from there.

Nothing I have tried opens any troubleshooting or advance startup options.

I can hear the fan running when I turn it on but am not sure if I can hear any other startup noises because of the fan noise.

Please help!

The drive itself was bad.  I was able to pull some data off by connecting it to a PC before it completely failed.  I did luckily have a backup file, and bought a new hard drive so everything is up and running again.  Thanks!

  • Hi,
You could try a battery reset, switch off the laptop and disconnect from mains, follow the instructions in the video, leave the laptop to rest for a while, reconnect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery before starting to use, No.2 in my snip is the pinhole for battery reset.

Thank you for the suggestion.  I should have added that I did do this whole process with the power supply unplugged,  and left it unplugged to rest overnight. I turned it on this morning and it is not fixed.  Same issues as before :(

Can you show us a picture of the screen you get to? It might the UEFI shell, which would point toward a drive issue. A power cycle while the system was writing to the drive can potentially muck things up.

Thanks for your help.  Turns out it's a good ol' case of corrupted hard drive.

So, did you have a backup to restore or will you be reinstalling the OS from scratch? Is the drive itself bad, or only bad data on it?

Great! It's always good to hear words like "I had a backup file". :)
