Plugged in external speaker popping noise when opening audio such as videos, mp3's etc. Acer Aspire5

I have bought a new Acer Aspire 5, everything is good apart from when I plug my external speakers in to the audio jack.  When I plug in my external speaker there is a popping noise when opening videos, streams, mp3's etc.  This happens the first time I open them or if I pause the video/track and then come back later and press play again.  There is no popping on the laptop speaker when the external speakers are not plugged in.  The external speakers worked fine on my old laptop but are quite old.  I have searched these forums and elsewhere but can't seem to find a fix.

Please can anyone help?

Right click speaker icon in tray. Click properties. Click Device Properties in output section. Click advanced setting near bottom of box that pops up. Click advanced tab in next box.  Change settings to CD or DVD quality. Jack E/NJ

Go to this link. Enter your full A5 model number or serial number id(SNID), for example A5-575G. Download and install/re-install the latest realtek audio driver. Jack E/NJ

Popping is power management issue. Follow my post on how to get 6.0.9054.1 driver and 1.20.235.0 realtek audio console.

I'm also getting lagging and stuttering when pausing and unpausing videos.  If I pause a video, leave it 1 minute and press play again, it will lag and stutter for 3-4 seconds.  If I leave it say 10 seconds instead of 1 minute, there is no issues and the video just plays as normal.

Do you think the two issues are connected?

Do you think it could be related to minimum processor state in power management?

Power management changes didn't make any difference.

The realtek driver on my old pc (which the speakers work on) is "Realtek High Definition Audio" 6.0.1.7930.  The realtek driver on my new pc (which I have the popping issue on) is "Realtek (R) Audio" 6.0.8923.1.

The speakers are Logitech X-230.  I have also noticed that there is static when I connect the speakers plug into the new laptop's audio jack, whereas there is no static when I plug the speakers in to the old laptop.

    Anyone got any ideas?

I think the issue is related to the older 3-element trs stereo speaker plug being used in the newer 4-element trrs jack with mic. Often the fit and contact made are not good for older model speakers meant for machines with separate speaker and mic input jacks. Jack E/NJ

Thanks Jack, seems plausible, do you think an adapter such as this might help?  https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B016AHYRNW

It might. But only if there's a snugger fit between the adapter's plug & jack, and laptop jack & speaker plug respectively. The adapter jack and laptop jack are electrically the same inside. So it's the slight variations in physical dimensions of the 3.5mm standard that might or might not make a difference. Worth a try. Jack E/NJ

That adapter didn't work, so now I'm thinking of getting this USB to audio adapter:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Headphone-Microphone-Raspberry-Ultrabook/dp/B01N41607I/

It is TRS like my speakers and the reviews seem promising.

Do you think this will work ok with my speakers?

    >>>The external speakers worked fine on my old laptop but are quite old.>>>

I have a similar plugin setup of old powered speakers with a newer smart TV. They always pop loudly twice when the TV is first turned on and the audio enabled. So I keep them turned off  until the TV is turned on and its audio enabled. Then i turn them on. No pops. They work fine too but are quite old. Just like yours.  Sometimes you just have to get with the program, break down, and buy new external speakers like the wireless bluetooth type. I'm just not ready yet though.    :)   Jack E/NJ

I'll have to buy new speakers eventually, but if that USB-Audio Jack adapter works I might not have to just yet.  Buying new speakers would be a gamble as I don't know 100% what the issue is.  Cheaper option would be to go for this adapter if we think it should work?   https://www.amazon.co.uk/UGREEN-Headphone-Microphone-Raspberry-Ultrabook/dp/B01N41607I/

I'm gonna guess a slightly greater than 50% probability that it'll work simply because the old speaker TRS plugs should get along with the separate output-only TRS jack. Good luck. Let me know because I might consider one for the smart TV if you're happy with it.   :) Jack E/NJ
