Vertical lines

I recently purchased a refurbished Acer KA2 - 27" monitor for a secondary monitor. I already have one as my primary. There are lines that run vertically on the screen, and are only visible on dark backgrounds (black for example). On a white page like Notepad, you cannot see them. Is there anything I can check, adjust, repair, etc? I really don't want to send it back, and if I have to I can live with it. I hate dealing with RMA's. I tried googling for a while, but nothing really looked like or sounded quite like my issue. There are so many "lines on screen" posts from various forums and for various monitors. I thought after a while of reading that a simple post with a pic might do more good.

My guess is that it's an artifact of the placement of the backlights. They are probably in vertical columns and when the screen is set dark enough you loose the normal evening out of the brightness.
