i now need to press the Fn key to avoid getting numbers associated with the respective keys. i.e j/1. k/2, l/3, m/0, u/4, i/5, o/6, p/*,m+0 and //+.

how do I get out of this?

    Which computer do you have? Which locale is the keyboard designed for? Typically you use the NumLk to switch that function, but with some keyboards that is not obvious.
