Either it isn't getting fully down and stuck in some sleep state or the battery is really confused. What process do you use in order to power the laptop down?

I have removed the battery so its not the issue,,,,,I power down using the OS.....btw I am using Ubuntu not windows..... thanks for getting back to me.... I am hoping that someone else using this platform has experienced something similar......it just started all of a sudden.....there have been a few instances of using the power button to shut down.... but when I restart the puter the os does some housekeeping so I can shut down the system properly......its kind of an interesting problem....... any thoughts are appreciated.....I am no by means a novice computer user.... been at it since the early 70's...used do ML just for fun.... LOL

OK, your machine is old enough that the Ubuntu kernel should fully support the hardware, but it's possible they don't in the default install. Windows has both Intel IRST and ME drivers, so you might check to see if they also have Linux support. If so, and they are not already there, you might compile them into your kernel to make sure you have everything supported. Either could potentially cause issues with power...

Ive been running ubuntu on this computer with no issues....ubuntu is a very mature OS, this is a recent occurqnce, I have tried different OS versions, rebuilding the os from scratch, and even upgrading to the latest LTS system.....as Yuhl Brenner once said tis a puzzlement.
