why is the cpu fan on AXC-780-UR16 revving for no apparent reason?

This has been going on for at least 6 months, with the incidence of revving now down to every 5-6 minutes.  It revs about 100% for about three or four seconds, then slowly ramps down.  This happens whether or not any programs are open.  I ran an msi kombustor test on it and the PC seems to be working as it should.  I've given the motherboard a fresh coat of thermal paste. but that didn't make any difference.  The unit is free of dust and is in an open area, not confined to a desk cupboard.  Any help is appreciated.

Run an app to monitor the CPU temperatures, if they are climbing too high the system will rev the fan up until the numbers come down. If the sensor is glitchy I could see it showing you bogus numbers intermittently that would show the same symptoms, but I haven't heard of a CPU failing in just that way.
