Hi all, new to the forum but hoping to be able to contribute in the future. My current problem is that approx half of the keys on my laptop have suddenly stopped working. I opened up the screen keyboard and that works fine but still no joy with the main keyboard. Any suggestions most welcome.

Hi, model is Aspire 5742Z-P614G50mnkk.  It works fine with external keyboard and also with onscreen keyboard.
  • Try a power reset. To do this, turn off the laptop, disconnect the power adapter, the battery, and then press the power button for 60 seconds. I also advise to check the keyboard connector:

Tried the power off, battery out and holding power switch for 60 sec. no change. Haven’t got the confidence to strip it down but will have to manage with external keyboard for now. Thanks for your advice though, I appreciate it.

    Dear Jdublu,

I had similar experience with my Dell laptop. Turned out that a couple wires of the ribbon like connector burnt out. Dell is very good on documentation. What they call a User Manual is actually a Service Manual. End up ordered the keyboard from E-bay for around $15 and replaced it. With Acer laptops, you just do not have this kind of luck.

What you need now is do a search from internet, hoping someone using the same model laptop posted a video on how to take down the laptop or how to replace the keyboard. If no luck on that, just bring it to computer repair store. Should be less than $100 for the repair.

Hi, that sounds like a strong possibility, did you see the post by egydiocoelho who showed a video how to strip it down. I think I might have to bite the bullet and do that,  if only to find out if the keyboard wires are intact. Thanks anyway, I knew I would get some good answers on this forum.

    Dear Jdublu,

Just viewed the video. The design is similar to my Dell laptop in terms of keyboard removable. As you can see, it is easy, should take less than a few minutes to replace the keyboard. The most important part is make sure proper connection ( I failed the first time, not fully inserted the connector).

Since it is so easy, why don't take out the keyboard and take a look first. Maybe it is just a loose connector.
If needed, go find the keyboard from Amazon or E-bay to replace it.

Oh, to avoid damaging the plastic tabs/locks when removing the keyboard. I suggest using a guitar pick or a credit card (using the corner) instead of metallic screw driver.

Hi guys, well after a bit of fiddling I got the keyboard out. Can’t see anything untoward so gave everything a blow with compressed air and put it all back. Still the same problem so guess I might have to look for a new keyboard, or laptop. Going to manage with external for now. Thank you both for your contributions.
  • The keyboard model is the TM7T_A10B:

I've had a similiar issue with my Aspire E 15. I think the reason my keyboard has been having issues is due to an electrical short. I didn't use the laptop for a month and it magically fixed a few of the buttons. A few still don't work. So I have no idea. I've been having problems with my power jack and am about to start a thread on it (I keep losing the charge, have to fiddle with it to maintain a connection).

    Dear AClunie,

Like I suggested to Jdublu, take the keyboard out and reconnect it. If problem persist, then order a new one and replace the keyboard. Be sure to find the video to take out the keyboard. If you are brave enough, you can try without the video (if you cannot find the video). Seemed laptop keyboard take down is similar even between different manufacturers .

    1. Login in Windows 10, if you haven't done so yet.

    2. Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Win button and then selecting the Device Manager from the menu.

    3. Then you will see your laptop's keyboard under Keyboards. Typically, it is a PS/2 Keyboard. Right-click on your keyboard and select Uninstall. If you are not sure which is your laptop's keyboard, you can uninstall all the keyboards.

    4. After you uninstall the keyboard driver, restart your laptop.

    5. After your laptop restarts, check if the driver is installed automatically. If not, again open Device Manager, then right-click on Keyboards and select Scan for hardware changes to install it. After the driver is installed, the keyboard should start working normally.
