ACER Extensa 2540 - Memory upgrade

Hi,

I recently decided to upgrade the memory in my ACER Extensa 2540 - the existing memory had developed a fault that causes the machine to blue screen. It is out of warranty so thought I might as well take the opportunity to upgrade to 16 GB at the same time.

I purchase 2 memory cards - 8GB each (one to replace the existing one and one for the new slot).

When I tried to insert both cards I found I can't? The second slot has no metal clips on it to capture the memory card... is that normal?

The other memory card works well... but I want to understand if I am missing something or should there be only one working slot?

Ok... I managed to get it last... it was much harder to install than the other socket. Thanks for the help!

I was wondering why a thread about memory upgrade had so many views and 0 answers, now I understand.

It is unusual I'll tell you that, I haven't encountered sockets with missing clips for now, would it be possible for you to take a picture and post it here? Depending on how the laptop is assembled you could dispense of the clips if you find a way to keep the card down. For example, if the RAM compartment of that machine is just a door away so to speak you could try to use that part of the body to keep the stick down.

Maybe even use some tack attached to the motherboard (after all, it's not conductive and not permanent) and then the RAM chip would stick to it as well, hopefully keeping it down; but it's odd to have a proper socket in which to plug a stick and no retaining clips.

Cheers! I will post a picture later... at work at the mo so don't want to remove the back of my laptop right now.

I must admit it confused me... I wondered if I could just use a 16 GB memory card in the one slot I had and return the 2 cards.

As you can see there is no equivalent metal clips to catch the other memory card... is that odd?

It looks like there are clips on both sockets, it's just that they look different since one card is installed right side up and the other upside down.

Ok.. actually I see what you mean... but it doesn't recognise the memory in that socket.

And should one of the slots be upside down? It make it tricky to install the memory correctly anyway?

@RiotFreé your model doesn't have a second socket, you can only replace that 2GB with a larger one, like a 8GB PC3L-12800S.
