In intel XTU my cpu is reading 3.4 ghz even though the base clock speed for the cpu is 2.8 ghz. How can I fix this? My computer is running at like 85 degrees C idle.

    Whoa! WTF! 85ºC idling...

    I'll work under these assumptions:
     - You're not overclocking your PC (quite the opposite, if you're into XTU you're probably looking at undervolting).
     - There is no rogue app running in the background using resources when you thing it's actually idling.
     - The fan works, I mean, it spins and all.

    Suspects that come to mind...
     - Wrong fan tables setup for the model, check the firmware revision you have against the latest one published in the support page and if they don't match upgrade it; if there was a problem specific to your firmware revision it could have been addressed already.
     - The interface between the components that produce heat (CPU, GPU, ...) and the cooling solution is messed up. For example, the thermal compound is missing or wrongly applied and it would require a repaste (I'd recommend it in any case).

Question for you, has it always been like that or do you recall anything recent that could have caused it?

Nothing recent comes to my mind why my cpu is acting up, after the roughly 2 1/2 years I have owned it, the heat issues have only gotten worse. I guess I can repaste but I don't know why it's acting up all of the sudden. And no there is no rogue application screwing over my cpu, in fact there's about 50 basic background processes that collectively take up like 50+% of my cpu usage. Yeah there is clearly something wrong...

Have you ever opened it to clean up the fan and fins of the heatsink? They could also be clogged and limit the ability of the laptop to cool itself, without airflow there's no heat exchange either.

SteamDoggo u definitely need to optimise your windows properly and undervolt with TS check here not intel xtu crapware (to remove it set settings to defaults uninstall it shutdown and reset bios to defaults) and repaste it with kryonaut or similar if you can without voiding yyour warranty also clean fans and exit airflow properly and make sure the back its lifted 2/3" at all times for a proper airflow good luck :)

PS: 2 years and u never cleaned it neither repasted it gaming laptops should be repasted/cleaned at least once per year depending on the usage so its time for u to do so
