The computer was off for a month. On returning home, the system would not boot. It asked to do a disk check but that never started. I removed the second HDD which is a 2TB Seagate.  Tried to read from another computer via USB.  The drive is not recognized.  Pretty sure the second drive is dead. But system still will not get past the POST.  So, it appears the second drive is dead and the primary SSD drive is probably corrupt.
Is there a way to get back the original image of the system?
Do I have to buy another Windows 10 license?
Any way to know if the SSD drive(s) are corrupt/damaged ?

This could be because the Windows 10 may have damage to its BCD (Boot Configuration Data) or more. Try this to fix the Windows 10 startup problems via the native Windows 10 repair tool - Startup Repair.

    Do this:

    1. Launch the Windows 10 Advanced Startup Options menu by pressing F11 as soon as you boot the computer.
    2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
    3. Wait for a few minutes and Windows 10 will fix the startup problem.

If you cant boot and/or you have to reinstall your Win-10 then you can’t get the original image back unless you have backed the image up? I would strongly recommend that you backup your system periodically with a backup software like Macrium Reflect or EaseUs etc as and the only way is if your existing Win-10 operating system can be restored through the above steps and through 'Advanced Options" > "System restore" and you can restore it to a previous restore point?

You don't have to buy another Win-10 key as your laptops details are registred with Microsoft. You should get into contact with Acer to get full details of how to fix these sorts of problems with an Acer product.

As far as the ssd is concerned, ssd’s very rarely go wrong but and once you get your sytem working use this freeware "SSD Benchmark" tool to check your ssd from here: https://www.alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?cat_id=4&download_id=9  which is an excellent choice for a quick test of your SSD’s speed and workability.

    Good luck.

When trying to use the Alt-F10 option to go into recovery mode, I get error 0xc0000185.  this indicates that something is missing ... like getting to the SSD drive.  It suggests getting Recovery Tools.  My recovery Memory Stick attempts to start, but gets to the above error.  Where can I get installation media to essentially start over.  I have backups of all data files, but no image of the boot disk... just the Memory Stick.  The machine has a 2 year warranty, but it ran out in Feb 2020.  It does not appear that I can get in touch with ACER once the warranty has expired.

At this point, I realize that the OS be reinstalled... but where do I start to get a bootable medium ?
  • Hello! When you connect the two hard drives, can you access the bios? Can you upload a photo from the information tab? You cannot simply claim that the hard drive has died without having verified that the hard drive appears on the information tab. If it does, can you send some pictures of the bios settings?

Was able to get into F2 BIOS setup.  Here is a snapshot of the Information screen:with the original hard drive in HDD2

I took the origninal hard drive out and replaced with another mostly blank HDD of the same size.
The BIOS Information looks like this:

The second HDD is detected.  When I reboot, the boot sequence is asking to check drive C:
After a few seconds, the computer turns off. This leads me to believe that the original D: drive was corrupt.
    The new drive is detected.

However, when the check fails (after about 1 second), I get the recovery screen

When it goes to recovery I am getting
    Error Code 0xc0000185
    A required drive is missing

  • Does the same problem occur when changing sata mode to ahci on the main tab? You may need to press ctrl + s.

Update on the problem with my un bootable system. I had Acronis bootable image which did not work.  It would get so far and quit.  Same was true with the F3 recovery memory stick.
Today, I downloaded the Windows 10 installation ISO from Microsoft and did a full clean install. This went perfectly and after a bunch of reboots and installation of drivers, the system is back mostly to its original state.
I had purchased a new laptop earlier this month and got all data and applications back.
So now I have a pretty fast machine that works but with no real purpose.  Maybe I'll turn it into a development machine.
BTW, the windows install recognized the license key .  Other than the 2GB secondary drive that had to be replaced there were no additional expenses.
