Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition (VN7-791G) Won't Turn on Clicking sound - not a hard drive issue

Laptop refused to charge over a year ago - no lights, nothing. Didn't have time to look at it and pulled the HDD and put it in an enclosure to get the data. HDD worked fine in the enclosure.
Finally decided to see if it was fixable. Took laptop apart, removed and replaced thermal paste since I was in there anyway. reinserted hard drive and reassembled it. Now when I plug it the charging light blinks, indicating it is charging. The power indicator is also blinking rapidly. Synced to the blinking power indicator the back-light for the keyboard is also blinking. There is also a click in sync with both lights beneath the keyboard in the vicinity of the enter and backspace key. If I pull the hard drive it acts the same. I have tried to reset the battery - no change. Not sure what to check from here.

Never encountered that particular issue... that clicking, I wonder where it comes from, the electrical switches that laptops have are generally silent.

Try loosening up a bit the screws that hold the cooling solution to the motherboard, like half a turn for example, I've seen machines refuse to boot or turn on if they were too tight for some reason, but other than that I wouldn't know what advise to give you, I'm sorry mate.

I am curious though, if you find out the cause please report back here.

aphanic - Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the screws and backed them off a touch. problem persisted. the only thing that prevents the clicking is to unplug the battery. but that seems to interrupt the power supply to the board so nothing turns on. A new battery is about $40 US. Given that all of this started with the laptop refusing to charge it is not unlikely that the battery is kaput. I don't understand how it would cause clicking unless the battery is interfering with power to the board and the click is the fan trying to turn on. Yes, a bit of a stretch. Unless someone comes up with a better suggestion that is my next step. Again - thanks for taking the time to answer my post.

No problem, I'm just frustrated I can't actually see it happening, it'd be easier for troubleshooting (being more people I mean).

From afar it's complicated to know what's going on or where the clicking comes from, it's a pity.
