I would like to upgrade the factory installed 256gb ssd drive in the nitro 5 an515-44 to 500gb or 1tb.  I've heard that there is an expansion slot.  If there is an expansion slot, where is it located? does the slot accomodate the same size ssd as the factory installed drive?

You have 2x M2 2280 slots up to 1tb (one is occupied already) and 1x2,5` SATA HDD/SSD slot up to 2tb. When you open the laptop check if the free M2 slot is NVMe or SATA only ( as the 2019 model has one M2 SATA only and one M2 NVMe) also check if the caddy and the SATA cable are already installed or they are in the packagind box of the laptop.
    Edit: it is PCIe/SATA combo

Thanks for the picture.  Covid-19 has presented the opportunity to do my own tech support!  This looks like my system manufactured in 2020.  What is confusing is that the NITRO 5 AN515-44-R99Q specs give the impression that the ssd cannot be upgraded pass 256gb and do not mention the spec for the expansion slot.  So once I got over that and popped the hood, the additional ssd slot(with the big number 2) looks smaller than the factory installed ssd.  Then it came to my awareness that there are around 8 ssd size forms!!! YIKES.  So in addition to m.2 2280, NVMe, SATA or PCIe, how do I know what size  ssd to purchase?  Any recommendations?

Your SSD (next to the ngff wifi+bt combo card) is 2280 and the second slot as well and the size of the slot is same, so both are 2280 if not please take a picture and post it here. NVMe supports the highest speed available for SSD because it uses PCIe x4 (eg. 4 lanes) so you can get one for upgrade. And yes the picture is from the 2020 model.

Please help me with my terminology.  I hope it does not get in the way.  The placement of the anchoring screw in area 2 leads me to believe that the space for the ssd is shorter than in area 1.  Is that accurate?

The screw for the SSD is near the USB port on the right in your picture, you can mesure it.

Does the expansion slot look shorter to you?  Once I have the measurement, how do I specify which "length"? Even Acer chat support did not mention a size difference.

The width should be 22mm and the lenght 80mm hence 2280, C and D will fit.

If you don`t believe me take out your existing one and put it in to slot 2 and you will see that it fits (don`t forget to put it back in the original slot after that unless you want to leave it in the slot 2 and change the boot order in BIOS)

back under the hood with a tape measure and an new perspective.  Yes, the area is the same size.  My mistake was that I was thinking that surely it is not suppose to rest on top of all the other stuff, what ever it is, so I assumed the gold round thing was the anchor screw.   Well a few minutes in thought along with a tape measure calibrated my eyes.  My next question is, can the ssd rest on top of those other connectors without damaging itself or anything else?

Yes, this is how the MB is designed.
