Uplifting (yes, it's an appropriate term for this extreme an upgrade :) ) Acer Aspire v3-771g 6485

Originally my question related to simply getting better RAM into this old beast. The Original config was:

MB: Acer VA70_HC, socket package 998B rPGA

CPU: Intel Core i5-3320M  2.6-3.3GHz

Chipset: Ivy Bridge HM77

BIOS: Insyde Corp v2.18

OS: Windows 8.1

RAM: 4 total banks avail, supports DDR3-1333 / DDR3-1600 / DDR3L-1333 / DDR3L-1600 / DDR3L-RS 1333 / DDR3L-RS 1600 … 2 banks total 6GB in 4-2 config,  ( PC312800 11-12-B2) DDR3 1600

As of now, the build is thus:

CPU: Intel ICore I7-3630QM 2.4-3.6GHz,

BIOS: Insyde Corp v2.28

OS: Windows 10 Pro (full clean install, not an upgrade)

DMA: KINGSTON Digital SUV500MS/240G 240GB mSATA 3.5 Internal SSD holding OS

RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 PC312800 11-14-B4

SSD/HDD: Seagate 1TB SSD/HDD hybrid, model STS1000LX015 as storage.

Net results are that while the system itself is in better trim overall, now a unit that I can do (very) light gaming on, watch movies, work from home, etc... I can no longer do any gaming more intensive than older 32bit applications. The CPU's individual cores are slower each one than the original I5 chip, and no real ability to offload applications to the dedicated nVidia GeForce GT 730M for gaming.

What can be done at this point to improve the laptops performance enough to sustain gaming on more modern titles?

    (1) What do you mean by "better trim"?
    (2) Did you make one or two changes at a time then test? Or make many more changes all at a time then test?

This laptop initially came with at least 4 different ibhm77 mainboard  flavors and then apparently more changes (mainly nvidia chips & VRAM) during production. Some were allegedly better suited to dual core CPUs though accepting both. But as far as I can tell, graphics performance was virtually identical for both CPUs with identical nvidia setups.  If you haven't done so already, you might test the ACER specific nvidia drivers installed in Win10's Win8 & Win8.1 compatibility modes to see if you can get better control over the nvidia chip though it's usually the game that automatically does so. https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/4090?b=1

The only other option I can think of is to run something like iobit's DriverBooster freeware to see if it'll pick up any drivers that'll play as well on Win10 as they did  with the old drivers on Win8x.

"Better Trim" is a nautical term for adjusting the sails to get the best speed. Appropriate here. :)

Trim in my glider means the speed it flies hands off. Should be adjusted to about 10% above stall by moving my hang point. But trim speed is not necessarily max speed nor yields best glide.   :)   Jack E/NJ
