AN515-43-R2M9 - Nitro 5. GPU thermal throttling at 81 C whereas thermal limit is 89 C

Hi Everyone, I am into gaming and overclocking. The reason I am posting this question here is that others can also verify their systems and Acer takes notice that they should fix these in their next BIOS update(s).

Issue 1
Its advertised everywhere (both Acer & seller website) that Ryzen 5 3550H processor has a base clock of 2.1 GHz and a boost clock of 3.7 Ghz. But in reality, the base clock is only 1.7 Ghz!? I checked the same with MSI afterburner and I don't know if there is a way to change that from inside Windows other than BIOS. In BIOS every advanced option is anyways locked out.

*** Acer should provide an option for unlocked BIOS because we have already paid for the device and we own it now, we should have the ability to change stuff as we want it. Acer can provide that with a disclaimer saying this BIOS update will void the warranty!

Issue 2
Checked with MSI afterburner again the GPU (Rx560x) max temp limit is 89 C. That means GPU will thermal throttle at around that temp. But in reality, it throttles in the range of 81 - 83 C. This restricts the chance of overclocking the GPU totally.

***Acer should take notice and update the thermal limit of GPU in BIOS to 87 - 89 C as per AMD's limit.

An unlocked BIOS would have let us solve these issues ourselves but Acer thinks otherwise! It would have opened up a host of advanced features for the user to modify which is not possible inside Windows.

Please like this post of it makes sense to you OR you faced a similar problem. Try the above steps and let me know in the comments below.

P.S. I have already repasted my laptop with Noctua NT-H1 so thermals are under control as far as normal gaming is concerned

Limit for the GPU is 90C and when it reaches 94C the system will shut down. For the unlocked BIOS I fully support you. This should be a gaming laptop anyway and you have to be able to play with the options even if it voids the warranty.

@batmalin thanks for your support. If you have the same laptop, I would request you to try the GPU thermal throttle limit. It's not even close to 90 C. It starts throttling at max 83 C. If want to know more on overclocking I can help you and you can achieve more FPS out of Rx560x but at the cost of more heat.

Yes, I have the same and I know how to overclock my GPU. Thanks for the proposal, but I am not a gamer(I play sometimes but rare). But still I want to have controll over my hw, thats why I got ch341a spi programmer and when I have time I will dump my bios and give it for unlock. I doubt Acer will do anything in that direction.

@batmalin that's awesome news. I also looked for modded bios in other forums but there's non that's tested out and stable for this particular model. It would be great if you could post your progress here and others who are interested can also chime in.

There is no such thing like stable or unstable one because this is your own BIOS which is already in the SPI chip  and to be unlocked only 2 bits have to be modified of your  BIOS dump and then flash it back. I assume there is a secret key combination, but nobody want to tell us. Waiting for a leak... :)
