Hi!

I purchased this laptop the end of April, and I really like it. However, I'm having a weirdness I can't seem to find any information on, though.

Randomly, the laptop will just shut down completely. It did it twice today, and I wasn't even using it. Then, when I booted it back up, the power light would come on, flicker, turn off, come on, flicker, rinse-repeat. Finally, it *did* boot up, but that also seemed to take longer than usual.

I was hoping someone here might have some idea, or diagnostics I should run that might shed some light on this.

Thanks!

lillyth have u checked your temps ? also perform a battery powerdrain as @egydiocoelho advised above and a bios setup defaults if the issue persists i advise u to backup everything u need a perform a stock recovery clean install ALT+F10 on boot to completely rule out any software issues

As an update, I am working through each of these possible solutions. Because it is so intermittent and random, there is no "fast" test. Here is the update so far:
    • It's definitely not temperature. I monitor it constantly, and when it happens, there is no correlation.
    • I have updated the BIOS, which solved the super slow to boot up after a crash problem.
    • I have reset the battery and checked connections - waiting to see if the problem happens again.
The last thing to try if it is not stable now is a clean install. I will check back in and let you guys know. Thank you!

I know this thread is a little old, but it may help someone in the future.

I developed the same problem with my Helios 700 a couple of months ago. it would just switch off at random times. I think it was related to the CPU voltage, to be honest. If I removed Acer's stock CPU undervolt it would stop happening.

For the first 4 months I had the laptop I had a custom undervolt of 0.14 and it was rock solid. Then all of a sudden it could not handle Acer's -0.10 default. I was thinking about leaving it without the undervolt and then thought what if this starts to fail down the track and I'm left out of warranty period so I called Acer and had a case number and was ready to ship it back to the USA (from Australia) at great expense.

I followed all the advice I could find, including the battery reset pinhole and nothing worked. Temps were fine. Clean install did nothing.

I decided to try to reset the battery using the start button method in this link - https://acer--uat.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/34843/~/acer-internal-battery-reset

Afterwards, the laptop rebooted a couple of times and the issue hasn't crashed since. I have been gradually increasing the undervolt by a little each week and now at -0.120 and all still okay.

I cannot explain why it worked and the pinhole method didn't.
  • OK! Continue testing and posting the result here.
